It's been a year since Bill Gates first uttered the words "Trustworthy Computing" in a speech to the technology industry. In that speech, Gates put forth an agenda that required all Microsoft coders to review their code for security faults, and even required some of those same coders to attend classes on how to write secure code. In the intervening year, what has Microsoft accomplished?

Microsoft claims that the benefits of the company's efforts over the past year will be seen fully in the company's upcoming Windows 2003 Server product, the first major software release after the Trustworthy Computing initiative began. Critics have pointed out that while the new programming paradigm may produce good products henceforth, Microsoft is doing very little for the hundreds of millions of existing installed Microsoft products that remain very vulnerable.
