image Editorials: Untraceable Email used to harass stalking victim image
Cyber Security
Anonymous writes "I was looking for stories about Internet stalking. I have heard of situations where the victim is being stalked using harassing emails & the emails are unable to be traced. The stalker used a free account & logged onto a server in another country (Japan) that did not keeps records past 3 days so, where the email originated was unable to be traced. I am on a committe for domestic violence & this story and the global tracking story are very disturbing. We are trying to collect information on this newest form of stalking. Thanks. "

It is an unfortunate fact of being wired globally. Some logs just aren't kept very long and if the recipient acts too late the logs may already be rolled over.

However there are multiple logs to check at least. There are the web server access logs and then there are the mail logs too. It depends on the host's settings for when the logs are rolled over and/or even archived. Yes, some do archive them for a period of time until even these logs are rolled over.

Depending on the free email service, it may or may not have included the IP address of the sender. For that information you would need to check the mail path headers of the email received.

For this and any other situation one can go with the installation of programs to help fight this and alternative SPAM.

As an example the following program can be used to deter mail bots:

http://tmda.net/requirements.html

TDMA is the name.

The original question however... the key is time. One has to act immediately when threatening emails arrive. Report them and forward the entire email with header to the appropriate abuse department and local authorities. Time is key when logs are concerned -- not to mention the politics that govern releasing information.
