NEVER mind the Oscars, Klez took out top virus for 2002, according to the eighth annual survey by ICSA Labs, an independent arm of TruSecure Corp.
But while the rate of growth for desktop viruses slowed somewhat, problems with malicious code including worms and Trojans worsened.
Both Klez and Yaha used a new payload tactic - hiding the source of infection by forging a genuine email address.
ICSA fears a fifth generation of viruses is beginning to emerge that will see a mix of threats linked to expanded broadband and wireless access.
From the initial boot sector viruses through macro viruses, mass mailers, multiple propagation and vulnerability exploitation, each evolution has ramped up the rate of propagation and the damage caused.
