The service, powered by McAfee anti-virus technology, will scan incoming and outgoing attachments and does not require the user to install any software or opt-in.
The technology will be on the look out for viruses, worms and Trojan horses, and will attempt to remove any malicious code before sending the message. The user will be informed - via a pop-up window - if an attachment contains a virus and cannot be sent or received.
All of AOL's email users will benefit from the free service if they use email, regardless of whether they use its browser-based or web mail service.
