Email Servers
Anonymous writes "My SMTP servers AV security updated today.
I usually only scan the report briefly,
but today noted a significant update that I thought I would compare to months past.
Looking over the report, I've noticed that since last December,
the number of (known) virii and trojan available to attack e-mail went from around 2,000 to:

Date/Time of last virus update
------------------------------
Tue 2003-04-22 00:03:29

Virus engine statistics
------------------------------
Engine version: 4.0.1.14 (newest)
Engine date: 2002/06/25 (newest)
Definition count: 64120
Definition date: 2003/03/18

That's correct, each and every e-mail my system processes is now scanned
for 64,000+ virii and trojans!
Not to mention the hundreds of anti-spamming filters...

Updates that use to come once a month, now come twice a day.

My system processes an average of 7,000 e-mail weekly,
yet only about 150 are accepted.
That makes over 99% of processed mail junk or hazardous.
And I run a very small, very secure SMTP server.
I can only imagine what the larger ones must go through.
Especially given the lack of security most have. "

As of today, the database now includes:
67016 virii and trojans.

Yet, services such as Yahoo, still scan for less then 8000

You may recall my report around X-Mas that Yahoo, Hotmail, Bigfoot, and a few others, all allowed over 80% of the virii and 100% of the trojans I tested by sending them through their services.

Quite pathetic realy.

Once again, this just promotes my views that people should get a little more educated with their computer, ditch those so called free for life e-mail services, and start your own SMTP server.

A private SMTP server properly set up would just about eliminate all spamming, virii, junkmail in general, and for the few dollars a month it would cost, save tax payers millions in the war against spam.

But since it is cheap, simple, and involves a little thinking, I can see why so many Americans have opted not to do so :)
