Anti-virus experts are warning web users to watch out for a new mass-mailing computer worm, which spreads via emails and shared folders.
The worm, called Kickin, arrives via email and can send itself to the addresses that it finds in the .NET Messenger, MSN Messenger, Yahoo Pager, Windows, ICQ address books.
Kickin, which first appeared in Austria, also attempts to spread itself through file-sharing networks including Morpheus, KaZaA, Bearshare and Edonkey2000.
It attempts to lure in victims with references to topics including SARS, patches, love letters, games and photos of celebrities.
When it runs on a computer, Kickin sends the following email message, with no attachment, to different anti-virus companies: "…if you received this mail, then someone has been infected with W32.CyberWolf.B@mm a new mass mailer worm". It has the subject "Hi, i'm 100% sure I'm infected!".
Luis Corrons, head of anti-virus company Panda Software, said: "There are now more and more worms using file sharing applications to spread; not just KaZaA, but other programs…This is an increasing trend which is seeing the emergence of viruses that take advantage of users."
