The Iranian government has ordered Internet service providers to block around 15,000 Web sites that are critical or 'immoral'
Iran has ordered new restrictions on the Internet, requiring service providers to block a number of critical news and immoral sites in the latest stage of a long-running crackdown on independent media.
Newspapers said a list some 15,000 sites to be blocked had been issued.
Many reformist publishers had turned to the Internet to get around strict press laws following hard-line judiciary bans on some 80 newspapers and magazines over the last three years.
But newspapers said on Sunday a committee of representatives of the culture and intelligence ministries as well as the state broadcasting monopoly had ordered internet service providers (ISPs) to block sites deemed immoral, or face court action.
We have started to block access to immoral sites as well as political sites which rudely make fun of religious and political figures in the country,'' newspapers quoted deputy post and telecommunications minister Masoud Davari-Nejad as saying.
