General News
Johnny-B-Goode writes "Norway will lay an underwater fiber-optic cable from the mainland to Svalbard and turn remote Longyearbyen into the world's best connected village, providing residents with 100 TV stations and a full VDSL (very high bit-rate DSL) network.

Preparations to lay two parallel cables have begun and should be ready by this autumn. They will mostly lie on the ocean floor but will be set underground at Isfjorden in order to avoid being damaged by fishing gear.

Before the end of the year every home in Longyearbyen will be coupled to the VDSL (DSL=Digital Subscriber Line) network.

The Norwegian Space Center is behind the project, which will cost at least USD 40 million. The cable will transfer satellite data pulled down in Svalbard and then transferred to clients in Europe and the USA at speed far higher than existing satellite transfer.

A miracle is about to occur, said Per Krokan of Telenor Svalbard. Former telecom monopolist Telenor has been testing out VSDL technology for a few years and Longyearbyen's 1,700 residents will be the first locality with full VSDL coverage.

The population will receive about 100 TV channels and they can choose their own films. Telephone and Internet will travel via the same cable, Krokan said.

Although stretching cable for about 3,000 kilometers from Andoeya to Longyearbyen seems inconvenient, the spot has been carefully chosen. Svalbard Satellite Station (SvalSat) has specialized in retrieving data from satellites in polar orbit - the location is ideal but the transfer costs have been daunting.

The operation has been threatened by an inability to compete but with the cable this will be reversed and there are many indications that more satellite stations will be built, said Norwegian Space Center head Rolf Skaar to newspaper Svalbardposten.
