Microsoft, Trend Micro and NAI have joined forces to create the Virus Information Alliance, 'a new virus information-sharing program with industry leading anti-virus software vendors'. Great news for sales and marketing people working for the three companies, bad news for sales and marketing people working for competitor companies, and not news for everyone else.
While Microsoft will have more to back up their 'security culture' image, Trend and NAI will be able to tell their clients that they have Microsoft's seal of approval. All for the price of a couple of pages on microsoft.com and a couple of press releases.
So, what does the alliance aim to do for the benefit of the consumer? '[Provide] our customers with detailed information on significant viruses that are affecting Microsoft products and our customers.' Which sounds an awful lot like 'repackage freely-available virus information'.
