image Macintosh: Security problem affects Mac OSX? image
Bug Alert
Anonymous writes "Screensaver crashing gains desktop

A REPORT on a board claimed there's a way to circumvent security on the machines running the latest version of Mac OSX, by crashing a locked screensaver and recovering the desktop.
According to the filing, if you leave a key pressed for five minutes or more and then press the Return key, that crashes the screensaver and gives you access to the desktop.

The person who filed the report claimed that he's notified Apple of the hole but hasn't had a reply from the firm.

You can find the filing here.

So far this 'bug' has not been reproducible across all of OSX. From the many mac site/forums that have listed this 'bug'; not very many people can seem to create the same results if any. It also appears to be a buffer overflow of the video drivers rather than the OS itself and on certain types of hardware configurations.

Anyone with gram of sense should know that a passworded screensaver is no security at all.

For most home users I think this is negligible. For business users it is a possible problem depending on the specific hardware involved and whether or not a screensaver is really the best form of security.
