IN MICHIGAN: Legislation awaits governor's approval

Sitting on Gov. Jennifer Granholm's desk and awaiting her signature is a new anti-spam law that would set up a do-not-spam list for Michigan residents similar to the federal do-not-call list for telemarketers.
The chief sponsor, state Sen. Mike Bishop, R-Rochester, calls it the toughest anti-spam bill in the nation.
Spammers would have to clearly identify their come-ons as advertising and would be prohibited from hiding their identity or pretending to be someone else.
Violators would face misdemeanor charges, along with imprisonment of up to one year and fines of up to $10,000. The penalties could be handed down on a per-message basis.
The law would also provide parental controls to regulate what kind of spam gets through to children.
Liz Boyd, a spokeswoman for the governor, said the measure is being reviewed by her legal staff. It arrived on Granholm's desk July 1, and she has until Tuesday to sign it, Boyd said.
