Granholm signs bill to help stop spam
By Associated Press
LANSING -- Senders of unsolicited e-mail ads would have to include a quick, free method that would allow recipients to remove themselves from such lists under a bill signed by Gov. Jennifer Granholm.
The new law is designed to stop the flow of unwanted e-mail advertising that pops up on a person's computer without warning.
Granholm signed the bill Friday, spokeswoman Liz Boyd said Monday.
It returns control of e-mail inbox to the consumer, Boyd said.
A related bill, one setting up a do not spam list in the state Department of Consumer and Industry Services, never reached Granholm's desk. It is awaiting final approval in the state House.
The new law will require spammers to use the subject line ADV: as the first four characters to notify recipients of the advertising nature of the message.
Matthew Prince, president of Chicago-based Unspam, said that unsolicited e-mail has increased 1,800 percent in the past two years, and will cost U.S. business $10 billion this year in lost productivity. In Michigan, he said, business will bear about $350 million of those costs.
