Nearly 1 in 5 Global Companies Report Product Piracy
September 24, 2003
By TechWeb News

Nearly 1 in 5 global companies have suffered losses from product piracy in the last two years, with 61 percent reporting repeated incidences of these crimes, a survey released Wednesday showed.

Among the companies victimized by piracy, 15 percent reported losses between $1 million and $10 million, according to the survey conducted by consulting company PricewaterhouseCoopers. The vast majority of the piracy cases -- 92 percent -- were committed outside of the organizations.

Sixty-one percent of the reported cases occurred in markets in South and Central America and Africa, while Western Europe and the United States accounted for only 5 percent of such crimes.

This is a large, growing problem, particularly in the software industry where piracy of intellectual property is so easy and can cause unlimited economic damage. Any company which licenses its intellectual property and has global distribution is at a high risk, David Marston, U.S. lead partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers's Licensing Management Practice, said in a statement. There are a number of countries where piracy is culturally accepted, very easy to commit and very difficult to get caught.

The consulting firm found that detection was difficult among most companies, with 34 percent reporting that piracy was discovered accidentally, 26 percent by security measures, and 22 percent by internal or external audit.
