New Jersey Man Indicted in Internet Auction Fraud
Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The owner of a South Philadelphia-based Internet auto auction was accused by a federal grand jury yesterday of cheating 30 people nationwide who paid a total of $500,000 to win luxury vehicles that never materialized.

Melvin Shaw, 56, of Voorhees, Camden County, was indicted on 10 counts of wire fraud and four counts of mail fraud involving the operation of his Philly Motor Sport.

Defense attorney Joel Harvey Slomsky declined comment on the charges.

Shaw was arrested by the FBI in April on charges involving about a half-dozen allegedly fraudulent sales of what Shaw advertised as the car of your dreams. The indictment cites almost five times as many alleged victims.

Philly Motor Sport was located at 2415 S. Swanson St. in South Philadelphia but did most of its business on Internet auction sites advertising luxury, classic and exotic vehicles.

The indictment involves a series of Internet auction sales last year and earlier this year. In each case, prosecutors allege that the winning bidder sent Shaw a check and waited for a vehicle which in most cases never arrived.

Shaw allegedly never shipped the auctioned vehicle or sent one that was damaged or not as advertised. He also allegedly ignored and rebuffed his customers’ requests for refunds.

The most expensive vehicle involved, according to court documents, was a 2002 Aston Martin Vanquish, purchased Nov. 15 for $155,000 by a New York man identified as S.L.

The indictment alleges that S.L.’s $155,000 check was cashed but he never received a vehicle or refund.

Prosecutors alleged that S.L. later learned his Aston Martin existed only in cyberspace: The original was totaled in an accident and titled as salvage.
