Spammers Steal E-Mail Addresses on Orbitz
Orbitz Security Breached, E-Mail Addresses Taken
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Orbitz, the online travel agent, said on Thursday that it informed law enforcement officials about a security breach that compromised some customers' e-mail addresses.
A small number of customers have informed us that they have received spam, or junk e-mail, from an unknown party that apparently used unauthorized and/or illegal means to obtain their e-mail addresses used with Orbitz, spokeswoman Terri Shank said.
Shank said there was no evidence that customer password or account information had been compromised. She declined to say how many customers had been affected but said the Chicago-based company had assembled a team to investigate the issue.
In July, database problems shut down the Orbitz Web site in its biggest outage since launching in June 2001.
