Larry Seltzer: Security Update
Special Report

Microsoft is ending support for a number of older versions of its Windows operating system and important applications. However, many enterprises still rely on these titles now entering orphan status. Check here for the latest news and analysis covering this software transition.

Should Auld Windows Versions Be Forgot...
As the year 2003 comes to a close, so do sales and support for a number of Windows versions and other Microsoft products. This is standard industry practice, but it's still a concern to many not least because of security implications. Some old products, such as Windows 98, have reached the point where Microsoft will no longer provide security patches.

There are other, more complicated reasons for some of the impending retirements. The date is approaching on which, under Microsoft's legal settlement with Sun, they will no longer be able to ship products with the Microsoft Java VM. Sun calls this a weak excuse and claims it short-changes customers. See eWEEK.com's special report on Microsoft's retirement of old software for full treatment of the issue.
