FBI
Internet Crime Center Changes Name
By Associated Press
December 29, 2003

FAIRMONT, W.Va. (AP)—To reflect the broad nature of complaints it's handling, the Internet Fraud Complaint Center is changing its name to the Internet Crime Complaint Center, or IC3.

The center, which opened in May 2000 and now employs 62 people, is a project of the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center that gives cyber crime victims a way to report what's happened to them.

Through partnerships with the National White Collar Crime Center and others, We have built a solid foundation to address today's cyber criminals no matter where they are or how complex their schemes may be, Jana Monroe, assistant director of the FBI's Cyber Division, said Wednesday.

Last year, the center processed more than 120,000 complaints of crimes including identity theft, international money laundering, computer intrusions, online extortion, credit card scams, intellectual property theft and a growing number of online schemes, Monroe said.
