Is this really a news item , or just a plug ?
Computer Associates gives away its antivirus and firewall product

That is misleading. It is giving away nothing.

The company is currently providing a no-charge, one-year subscription to its eTrust EZ Armor antivirus and firewall desktop security suite

It is offering a one year trial.
And what happens after the first year? Are they hoping that people become familiar with these products, and will be reluctant to change.
One presumes they will be offered some sort of discount for a renewal of their suite.
These items [FREE firewall and anti-virus software] are readily available, and have been for some time.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition is available for all single home users

Outpost firewall [or Zone Alarm, if you prefer] are free products for the home user that are also available.

There are also other very good options available at the downloads page here
