CyberCrime

One change leaves the way open for the introduction of others.
Niccolo Machiavelli (1469-1527); Italian philosopher, statesman, writer.

- Weekly summary -
Oxygen3 24h-365d, by Panda Software (http://www.pandasoftware.com)

Madrid, January 31, 2004 - This week in Oxygen3 24h-365d, we have reported
the news(*) summarized below, from which we can highlight the appearance of
Mydoom.A and the epidemic it has caused.

- Microsoft webcast on security patch implementation (01/26/04).
On January 27, Microsoft offered a webcast about tools, technologies and
security best practices for implementing a patch management process and
strategy for Windows platforms in corporate environments.

- New worm W32/MyDoom.A worm causes numerous infections (01/27/04).
Just a few hours after it appeared, the new Mydoom.A worm had already caused
incidents in thousands of computers in numerous countries. The main aim of
this worm is to attack and saturate networks of any size, preventing users
from working with their computers.

- Panda Software reports the appearance of variant B of the Mydoom worm
(01/28/04).
PandaLabs has detected variant B of Mydoom, which is even more dangerous
than its predecessor, as it is designed to prevent several antivirus
programs from updating correctly. Like Mydoom. A, this variant is designed
to attack and saturate networks of any size.

- Mydoom.A epidemic not letting up (01/29/04).
Four days after it appeared, Mydoom.A is still spreading rapidly. One in
every five e-mails is carrying this worm, making four million infected
e-mails currently in circulation. According to data collected by Panda
Software's online antivirus, Panda ActiveScan, Mydoom.A has infected six
times more computers than Bugbear.B, the second virus most frequently
detected. Corporate environments around the globe have been hit the hardest
by Mydoom.A, and for this reason, the number of infected computers exceeds
400,000.

- Microsoft offers reward for MyDoom.B author (01/30/04).
Yahoo has reported that Microsoft has promised to pay 250,000 dollars to
anyone who helps authorities find and prosecute the author of MyDoom.B. This
Microsoft initiative follows a similar announcement from SCO Group Inc.
earlier this week, which offered 250,000 dollars for information leading to
the arrest and conviction of the creator of Mydoom.A.
