image Why would you use pirated software? image
CastleCops
Our previous poll that ran a couple months indicates that out of 7341 voters, 28% would use priated software to test it (try before you buy scenario), whereas another 28% would not use it at all. These two categories were the highest percentage in any bracket. Following closely behind at 21% is the category "it costs too much", which means software companies price their products too high for 21% of the population. However, 15% of the voters don't want to contribute any money at all to use a product. The final category at 6% of the tallies fall under the "don't use it enough" to warrant purchase of a product. So all in all, 43% of the voters would use pirated software, if we tack on the testers that would increase the percentage to 72% of the population that use pirated software (if even for a short time). This would mean a steady 28% that do not touch pirated software.

I received this in an ARCAMAX newsletter:

Nearly 25 Percent Polled Using Fake Software

Source: United Press International

WASHINGTON (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Nearly one in four professionals say their offices use pirated software, a study released by the Business Software Alliance in Washington, D.C. shows.

Research firm Ipsos Public Affairs polled more than 1,500 professionals in the accounting, architecture, engineering, financial services and graphic design industries for the study. The BSA represents U.S. software manufacturers.

While nine in 10 of those polled said software piracy is a risk no business can afford to take, 23 percent of them said at least some of the commercial software used in their workplace is unlicensed.

In conjunction with the results of the survey, BSA also announced more than $2.2 million in settlements with 25 companies nationwide.

According to the Global Software Piracy Study released by the BSA in July, 22 percent of software in the United States is unlicensed. In 2003, piracy losses in the United States totaled more than $6.5 billion.
