image Illegal File Sharing Targeted in Wave of New Lawsuits - RIAA image
Copyright
cj writes "WASHINGTON - The music industry’s campaign to deter online music theft and foster an environment where legitimate online services can flourish continued with a new round of copyright infringement lawsuits against 761 illegal file sharers. As before, illegal file sharing on college campuses was a focus.

Twenty-five of the lawsuits brought by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), on behalf of the major record companies, were against individuals using a university Internet connection to illegal distribute music files on unauthorized peer-to-peer services such as eDonkey, Limewire and Kazaa, a press release by RIAA stated. The university networks used by the 25 individuals who were sued included: American University, Amherst College, Assumption College, Boston College, Boston University, Bridgewater State College, Emerson College, Iowa State University, James Madison University, Mount Holyoke College, Northeastern University, and the University of Massachusetts. Such lawsuits may prove to be more damaging to the RIAA as they have been since their blitz began in the summer of 2003:

More and more people see the RIAA as a greedy corporate entity that needs to fall for the betterment of the people and artists alike. These continued lawsuits just fuel that fire and only serve to increase the pirating that hurts the artists more then the RIAA.

Many of the lawsuits they initiated have been dropped as evidence is tough to come by, especially now that many people have learned that they can send their traffic through public anonymous proxies (there are many on the web). Tracing traffic through these is difficult at best. Spoofed identities can also lead to false culprits. It's, at the very least, an inexact science to base a lawsuit on.

Maybe someday the RIAA will learn that the best way to curb piracy is by lowering prices. They could easily cut the cost of a CD or music downloads in half and still bring in a bundle. They would certainly sell more and piracy would plummet.

If they cared about the artists they represent they would do this, but since greed is the source of their blindness, this will never happen. Making a thousand percent profit is all that seems to matter.

To add more fuel to the fire, all signs indicate that P2P file sharing is also on the downslide, and has been for a year, yet RIAA sales are still in decline. They may soon no longer have their self appointed nemesis to blame for their lagging sales. Who will they attack next to blame for their blindness?
