CastleCops
Ikeb writes "CastleCopsWiki is a new CastleCops service dedicated to the capture, retention, and collaborative updating of important information relating to computer security.
Both seekers and contributers of such information are most welcome:
  • You're tired of attempting to guess that perfect search term to coax information from the CastleCops forums, and you've been around the CastleCops forums (or any web-based forum for that matter) long enough to know how excellent information, unless stickied, drifts down the topic list, quickly lost in the sands of time. Compounding that, information is all too often obscured by the oceans of unrelated discussion.

  • You have computer security-related information you'd like to share with CastleCops members and the cyber-world at large, and would enjoy collaborating with other experts to best present the information to readers.

The Wiki Concept
The CastleCopWiki service is based on the popular MediaWiki package, also used by the Wikipedia cyber-encyclopedia project. If you've never used a wiki before, be prepared for some soul-searching. The concept of allowing ANOTHER person to edit your pride and joy may be a radical thought for you. But if managed properly, it allows the ultimate in democratic collaboration.
For board administrators (sysops), the major responsibility is always remaining vigilent to degradation of CastleCopWiki information. Any of the sysops familiar with the affected sections are able to revert pages backing out the unwanted or unintended changes. Once you have added significant content to CastleCopsWiki, you could well be invited to administer or share administration of your area of expertise. After all, you'd be the subject matter expert and would know if something is amiss.
To Browse for Information at CastleCopWiki
Begin browsing from the Main Page. The Main page is always available via the left hand column.

To Contribute Information to CastleCopWiki
  1. Browse to CastleCopWiki, create your wiki account and login.

  2. Go to the Main Page, follow the link to the Beta Content page, click the edit tab, and add your link (e.g. [[Malware Threats, Recovery, and Safeguards]] ) followed by a description. Tip: Just look at what has been done for the existing links.

  3. Save your changes and you'll notice that the link you created shows up coloured red.

  4. Click on the link and the wiki takes you directly to the edit tab (since the page doesn't exist yet).

  5. Now create your main page and spawn whatever pages you think are appropriate.

Editing Considerations
  • Poke around in the edit tabs of pages already available for a few examples of what's possible. We're all still learning so the techniques being applied may still be pretty basic. Pitch in with your own ideas as you learn the ropes.

  • For in-depth assistance, the left-hand column Help:Contents link is always available and takes you to any of the three main MediaWiki manuals. A wealth of WikiPedia examples are referenced there.

  • Once you have a few pages that are fairly solid, let a sysop know and some other wiki techniques such as a unique category and perhaps a suggested template could be added. You should aim to have all of your pages interlinked along with some basic information on each page before templates are applied.

  • Collaboration with others can be accomplished in a couple of ways. Besides the CastleCops forums, you could use the discussion (WikiTalk) page to discuss details specific to any particular page.

  • Editors are asked to assist sysops by noting the rationale for substantive changes at the corresponding discussion page and signing their note.

Have at it!
Since this is a new service there will undoubtedly be glitches. Please communicate any issues you may run into while using CastleCopsWiki so that the service can be improved.

It is hoped that this service will augment your current enjoyment of the CastleCops experience and help you to further the CastleCops Vision.

I bet you've been itching to say this.

I'll be around.
