Security Hole
Snail writes "Does this not sound like the most promising thing since sliced bread in the way of security?

====================

The very portability of the laptop computer means there is a risk that confidential or secret data can fall into the wrong hands. With the T4230 this risk is virtually removed. The T4230 is a high security, sub-dermal fingerprint reader that plugs into the PCMCIA port of a laptop computer.

The T4230 fingerprint reader dramatically increases security whilst reducing the number of passwords you require. You can enroll all or any of your fingers.

If you share your laptop with others, you can enroll many different people, each with their own “data access profile” thereby keeping your personal data secure. You, or others who are allowed to use your laptop, may also be registered as part of a group of people; all with the same access rights.

When you have used the T4230 you will never want to use any other form of security for your laptop again!

Buy this now! Its only $180

At a touch of a finger, the sub-dermal fingerprint reader pops from the side of the laptop to allow you to gain access. Just enter your name and place your finger on the T4230 sensor. Within a second, the fingerprint is read and compared with the stored template created during enrollment. User enrollment is fast, simple and requires very little proficiency.

If you remove the T4230 from the PCMCIA slot in your laptop you render it useless. Without a T4230 card in the PCMCIA slot and your finger, you cannot log in and access to your data is secured.

====================

The cost of this security?
Sure, each low cost card may only be $180, but consider...

The technology to develop it - 8 years
The R&D budget - $12.8 million
Marketing and Distribution - $4 million
Modern Dell Laptop - $2,800

The cost of a drunk, computer illiterate, smacking an annoying yuppie at a cyber cafe', over the head with an empty bottle and using the unconscious teens finger to unlock the laptop, PRICELESS!

====================

That's right... in Sheboygan WI, a drunk man with next to no knowledge of computers, has demonstrated, just how simple it is to thwart the newest security.

The annoying individual, a teenager who just could not leave yet, the cyber cafe', as they were chatting, struck a sour note with the drunken individual.

The drunk, after knocking out the teen, unlocked the laptop, was said to have changed the password, and fled the crime scene.

At present, police are still looking for the thief and due to age, are not releasing the name of the teen.

====================

Crime aside, what I find disturbing about all of this, is that-
1. Witnesses watched without assisting
2. This proves the old adage, locks only keep honest people out

Isn't it good to know, years of life and millions of dollars were wasted? "

Just some food for thought.

In the 1976 Grade B horror film, They came from Outerspace, a biometrics scanner is used for security doors to a top security lab.
The security was thwarted in much the same way that the one in this thread was...
the difference being, in 1976, biometrics security was just a Sci-Fi fantasy proved to be pointless.
Where as the T4230 and similar devices are now real.

Now, building a lock, knowing for decades prior to just how useless that lock is, should it not be criminal to make said lock?

And being criminal, how did companies manage to get funding to waste so much human life and millions of dollars?

What insurance company would be stupendous enough to back such security?

For every computer system stolen or breached, should those who made this known to be useless biometrics security not also be held accountable as accomplices to the crime since they are the ones trying to convince the public to use the technology?

Does this device protect the data if the hard drive is removed from the computer and installed in another machine?
