Hassle
MowGreen writes "Dell computer company has been installing the My Way spyware bar since February 24, 2005. This link is to their web page explaining Dells and My Ways affiliation : (click here) [support.dell.com]

Heres a very interesting thread on the situation with insightful comments by ace First Responder negster22. The thread contains a link to Doxdesk.com with Andrew Clovers analysis of My Ways behavior and why it was deemed spyware.: Microssoft AS and MyWay (click here) [castlecops.com]

I had saved a Dell laptop to My Cart that had to be purchased by 9 PM CDT tonight. BUT I came across this thread today : Get rid of My Way Search Bar (click here) [castlecops.com]

I was not happy to learn that My Way was being pre-installed on Dells systems.
So, I contacted their online support. This is the transcript of that chat:

{Vinay 5:07:28 PM} Thank you for contacting Dell Technical Support Chat. My name is Vinay. May I have your complete name and telephone number as on our records, please?
{ 5:07:52 PM} Steve Wechsler xxx-xxx-xxxx
{Vinay 5:08:10 PM} Thank you for the information, please give me a minute while i pull up your records.
{Vinay 5:08:20 PM} How may i help you Steve ?
{ 5:08:50 PM} The Service Tag entered is not for the system if question, Vinay. The question involves a system saved in My Cart.
{ 5:09:19 PM} Is there anyway that I can get the syste m without having MyWay installed ?
The next 4 minutes dealt with an OS upgrade and has been snipped to prevent boredom
{ 5:13:55 PM} And what about MyWay? Can the system ship without it being installed ?
{Vinay 5:14:31 PM} Do you mean assembled ?
{ 5:15:06 PM} No. Ive seen newer systems with this so-called toolbar named MyWay installed.
{ 5:15:21 PM} Can I get it without that crud installed ?
{Vinay 5:15:45 PM} I am not sure about that Steve..May be the sales will know..
{ 5:16:14 PM} Can you direct me to someplace where I can register my concerns about MyWay ?
{ 5:16:26 PM} I dont think Sales knows anything about it.
{ 5:16:51 PM} Tried searching the entire Dell site and could not find a place for feedback.
{Vinay 5:19:36 PM} Is that Myway install a software ?
{ 5:19:51 PM} It comes preinstalled
{Vinay 5:19:52 PM} I havent heard about it sorry ?
{Vinay 5:20:19 PM} Did you order for that ?

{ 5:20:45 PM} No. All systems come with it now whether the customer wants it or not.
{ 5:21:04 PM} Not a good thing, if you catch my drift.
{ 5:21:36 PM} I just read their Privacy Policy and it does not make me comfortable having it installed.
{Vinay 5:21:45 PM} Okay..I dint know about that..Let me search on this..
{Vinay 5:23:41 PM} Okay..Steve Dell systems dont come with the MYWAY..
{Vinay 5:23:49 PM} I am very sure of that.

{ 5:24:38 PM} Every new Dell system Ive seen lately has had it installed. Has Dell dropped My Way ?
{ 5:24:56 PM} I do Tech Support, Vinay
{Vinay 5:25:21 PM} Yes Sir..Its dropped Myway..
{ 5:25:47 PM} Thats great news. Thanks for the info, Vinay. Have a GREAT day/night.
{Vinay 5:26:06 PM} Same to you too..
{Vinay 5:26:15 PM} Have a great evening..Bye..
The visitor has ended the chat session.
Great. Now Ill get the laptop. But first ... lets call Dell.

After calling Dell and talking with a Sales Rep, here is the end of the tale ... she told me that she had purchased the exact same laptop in January and that MyWay was not installed. I asked her if since then had Dell started installing MyWay on their systems. She put me on hold to contact the techs and when she came back she said that they did NOT.

I informed her that I had just visited their Dell My Way web page and that it was first published on 2/24/05. She put me on hold again and when she came back she was laughing. She said that the techs are not fond of being inaccurate and that, yes, MyWay IS pre-installed on all of their systems.

She apologized for the initial misinformation and I told her that she did not owe me an apology since its company policy that kept her in the dark in the first place.

So, lets get this straight : Dell Preinstalls MyWay on their systems. And then keeps their Sales Reps and Online Tech Support in the dark on the matter.

And this is why I will be cancelling my Preferred Account with Dell and not recommending their systems to my customers.

This blog link shows how stirred up the IT community is getting over this deceptive behavior :

Since I have found it impossible to express my disdain for this deceptive behavior through any channel on Dells website, except by canceling my account, I thought it prudent to expose their behavior here.

One need only to check out Dells Forums to see how upset their customers are. Apparently, Dell does not care.

DISCLAIMER : All of the above is based in fact and can be documented. My opinions on Dells deceptive behavior are mine and do not reflect those of the owner of this website. "

after reading this article considering to be true i felt that the service provided by dell is hope less
the company should be updating each and every matter to
its employes.
other wise it would be ridiculous.
better means is to inform their employes to get updated with company matters so as to improve their sale
sale improves with demand
and demand improves with customer satisfaction.

Pretty crappy deal, if true. However, does anyone really keep all the pre-installed junk that Dell ships with their PCs? Doubtful. I know I don't. And one of the first things I do when I receive a new PC (and recommend others do, as well) is to scan for spyware, viruses, etc. That being said, if my spyware scanner just detected one single lonely piece of spyware pre-installed on a new PC, I'D BE RATHER HAPPY! Heck, only one? Wow, this'll be easy...goodbye MyWay! Done. Of course, having no spyware would be perfect, but I haven't seen a 'perfect' PC from a large vendor in quite some time (yrs); which is why I like to build my own PCs rather than buy them (laptops excluded). Good luck with Dell.

It's true. MyWay comes on all Small Business systems now also. It is difficult to remove. You think it is removed from add/remove programs but it comes back on boot and the entry has disappeared from add/remove! We have folks at dslreports posting HijackThis threads asking for help removing it. I posted about it in the Dell spyware removal forum six months ago and no one believed me. But we have proof at dslr that folks were getting this installed on HIGH END Dells (not just cheapie ones) as LONG AGO as September 2004.

So, Dell is lying about the February 25, 2005 date. That is crap. I have seen the evidence that Dell has been doing this long before this past February. It is just that no one paid attention until the Register article recently.

It is pathetic. Also ironic that Dell partners with CounterSpy which can remove it. I am lucky in that my latest Dell was purchased Nov 2003 so it didn't come with MyWay. I no longer recommend Dell and will not purchase from them in the future.

While doing some more research on the WIndows Package Installer Dell uses to install My Way, I found something interesting. It explains why the Dell My Way Toolbar, though present in the Control Panel 'Add/Remove' programs utility, cannot be uninstalled in the conventional manner (via the 'Remove' button). From what I can see, Dell took took advantage of the following feature of the Windows Installer SDK to make the 'remove' button non-functional (The last sentence is the most signifigant one):

From Frequently Asked Questions About Windows Installer - How-To Guide:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/community/centers/management/msi_faq.mspx
Quote:
Q. How do I hide an application from Add/Remove Programs?

A. To hide an application from Add/Remove Programs, set the ARPSYSTEMCOMPONENT property to 1. This property can be set within the Property table of the package, on the command line, or by means of a transform. On operating systems earlier than Windows 2000, setting the ARPNOREMOVE property to 1 will hide the application from Add/Remove Programs. On the Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems, ARNOREMOVE disables the Remove button of Add/Remove Programs.

End Quote

I am sure that feature was intended to be used as a safeguard to prevent the removal of critical applications from corporate or publicly used computers. Of course, Dell exploited that feature to prevent its loyal customers from removing its own planted spyware. Imagine how confusing and frustrating it must be when the typical computer user to tries to remove the Dell My Way Toolbar from the Control Panel, only to find that for some reason, the remove button does not work.
