Its been reported that the Microsoft patch was inadvertently leaked onto the Internet and the security community has been testing it. With photos provided by Sunbelt, this is the installation of the patch:

"An early version of a security fix for a Windows flaw that is being used as a conduit for cyberattacks was prematurely posted online by a Microsoft employee." Microsoft says:

"It really was an inadvertent thing that happened," Fry Wilson said. "We have the security update on a fast track...(and) somebody accidentally posted a prerelease version on a community site. It has been taken down, and we don't recommend customers use it--it is not the version that we will be releasing on Tuesday."

Sunbelt says during testing of this patch that even though the Windows Picture and Fax viewer shows up, the vulnerability is not exploited.

The patch is still scheduled for release on patch Tuesday, next week.

This patch has now been officially released by Microsoft and is available to install as of now (Thursday, Jan. 5, 9 PM EST).

I guess the news (or leak) of this update or the severity of the risk forced Microsoft to release it a little earlier than originally planned......
