Applying Myself: Am I configured correctly for protection with modem and router? |

A CastleCops guest, Learning2, posted the following... "I just got my computer back after a long hiatus. I have a Verizon Westell 6100 modem and a DLink EBR-2310 wired router. I followed the instructions for the router to setup router and modem by running the CD first. Now I'm all hooked up. Do I have to do any special configuring for the router so that it blocks any hacking attempts or am I okay now? When I'm not working on the Internet and using Word, for example, is it advisable to turn off the modem or router to prevent any incoming? Or am I safe with what I have? I still have some other S/W to load and then I'll install free ZoneAlarm. I've got AVG free running now. Thanks for your help."
Great discussion going in this thread, stuff to learn, and heck why not offer some ideas? Join the fun in active security.
