Team CastleCops
!RuyLopez writes "Team CastleCops, the science and science education component of the CastleCops community, is pleased to announce the opening of a new forum dedicated to Global Warming and Climate Change.

This new forum will provide news coverage of this important and timely topic. It will also provide the CastleCops membership with a place for thoughtful, objective discussions of the scientific and public policy issues directly relevant to Global Warming and Climate Change. Discussions of responsible public actions that individuals might choose to pursue to make a difference at the local, regional, national, or global level will also be welcome.

Currently, coverage is focused upon the two reports recently published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change: Fourth Assessment Report: Climate Change 2007, and Climate Change 2007: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability.

I am skeptical of any environmental reports generated during the current republican administration and previous congress. We have watched for years as they consistently removed the teeth from existing federal environmental protection legislature. Hopefully, the new congress can begin to return protections at least to 1990s levels, before the deregulations began.

For the sake of clarification, the reports in question are not the work of the United States government. They are reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) which includes representatives from over 130 countries.

Mandate and Membership of the IPCC

Recognizing the problem of potential global climate change, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) established the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 1988. It is open to all members of the UN and WMO.

The role of the IPCC is to assess on a comprehensive, objective, open and transparent basis the scientific, technical and socio-economic information relevant to understanding the scientific basis of risk of human-induced climate change, its potential impacts and options for adaptation and mitigation. The IPCC does not carry out research nor does it monitor climate related data or other relevant parameters. It bases its assessment mainly on peer reviewed and published scientific/technical literature.
