Site: Data loss and new server donation drive marathon |
|
|

Greetings folks on this second day of March. Around lunch time EST 29th of February, CastleCops database system experienced two critical failures (one: raid card, two: ZFS file system). Either one of these could have created the permanent data loss. Fortunately, the loss was limited to the forums, MIRT, users, and the CLSID list. Everything else seems to have been salvaged. For the data loss, we had to restore from the last full backup on the 27th of February.
The month of February brought along many performance challenges. The end result is that CastleCops pounds the database server and PHP files, so we require high performing servers. To that end during the unexpected outage, we started a new server donation drive. The systems we are planning to build cost an estimate total of $15,000 USD. I plan on having some kind of meter displayed at CastleCops detailing where total received donations stand in relation to our projected goal. Any funds received beyond the goal will be used in the hardware purchase. We hope to receive exact costs this week.
An appeal page has been started to reflect the donation drive. We encourage folks to add to it and give it a life of its own which reflects CastleCops.
In the meantime, now that the site is operational once more, I have disabled background scripts for the incidence teams until daytime EST. I shall enable full site operations when I'm able to monitor transactions and performance closely.
Join me in thanking Paul Vixie (and an anonymous entity) at Internet Systems Consortium for his continued help.
If you observe any oddities, please let me know. As a sidenote, in the six years we have been online, I seem to recall that perhaps this is our second time experiencing data loss. The first possibly was around four or five years ago. Again, thankfully we were able to recover large portions of data, but unfortunately any new users in those two days are gone.
Moving forward, as Spamhaus remarks of CastleCops lovingly, lets continue "making cybercriminals unhappy since 2002".
