I use Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10 but know little about Linux, because I just converted from Windows about 2.5 months ago, so how would I go about updating the kernel?

I am trying to learn more about Linux, but for now, if the package manager can't handle something, it's not going to be handled at all...

Hello,
You'll get ALL your updates - kernel + apps - via the updates / package manager. Nothing to worry about. That's 2-3 mouse clicks at most.
