hi,
I created a little script in python using libgmail to make our gmail spam reporting duties to knujon a bit more comfortable.
Anyone interested can grab it at http://www.submanifold.be in the misc section. Feel free to comment, here or per email.
have fun,
wal

Hi,
I have used Thunderbird with the Knujon add-in in the past to forward spam. This has somehow stopped working this week - it is no longer logging on to Gmail successfully, however many times I enter the correct password.
So, I thought I try this one. Unfortunately the instructions are a bit vague...
1) I have downloaded and installed Python 2.5 (Windows XP).
2) I have downloaded and extracted libgmail (into the Python25 folder).
3) I have downloaded and extracted gknujon (into the Python25 folder).
Now what do I do? I have been able to run libgmail and logging into my Gmail account. But I have no idea how to run gknujon.py? When I try to run it the same way as libgmail.py I get error 'Login failed. (Wrong uname/password?)'.
Thanks,
Pat

Ah - README.txt: "Don't forget to replace yourusername@gmail.com and yourpassword with the correct data, and you 're all set."
Ok, done that. Now when I run it, it says
| Quote: | downloading spam messages...
-- Summary : 0 spam messages reported to knujon
Press Enter to continue... |
But there is lots of spam in my Gmail 'Spam' folder.

All clear now! The messages in the 'Spam' folder must be marked unread (they were marked as read due to my previous playing with libgmail).
Thanks for a great tool!
Next question: is there a way to separate the messages that go to the knujon and the stockjunk addresses? Actually I could control it with the read/unread marks. But where can I specify where the messages are reported to?
[Edit] I have copied the script (to gstockjunk.py) and changed the 'to' variable to the stockjunk reporting address.

The TO-address is on line 20.
careful though, due to a bug in libgmail I couldn't attach the spam's as .eml files, hope your other reporting address takes the spams as textfiles.
have fun,

The other reporting address goes to the same domain, with 'stockjunk' instead of 'knujon' before the @ mark. So there should be no problem (except that they seem to be forwarded to other addresses).
Will you eventually fix the 'txt' vs. 'eml' bug?

Definitely, but it's not up to me as it's a bug in libgmail.
So I 'm basically waiting for them to fix the bug

Ah, sorry - I somehow thought that libgmail was also yours. But as long as Knujon accepts the txt messages, no problem for me, anyway

I just submitted another two batches to knujon and stockjunk, and it got me thinking...
The stockjunk spams usually just contain an image, together with some random text. If this is submitted in txt form, how will the recipient(s) receive the images? Will the image just be inserted into the text as hexadecimal stream?
If this is the case, the recipient(s) (.e.g the SEC) will not be able to look at the image to identify the stock that is being manipulated.

knuj0n doesn't have a problem with this, and you yourself can view the messages/images by changing the extension to .eml .
I would check with the other instances you 're reporting to. If the mail becomes useless to them, then I 'm afraid I can't help you, it's a matter of waiting until libgmail fixes that bug. But I have a hunch it's not an issue, especially if their committed to fighting this type of spam.

I personally don't forward the messages to anyone else, but the knujon stockjunk address seems to forward them to a number of places. I do not know if they can actually use it in that form.

the knuj0n said this and this.
don't worry, worry leads to wasting time, wasting time leads to the spam-way_of_life.

Well said! I needed that. I'm going to remind myself of this quote often. _________________ --
