Is there anyway to stop all the Korean Spam? If I spoke Korean, that would be one thing, but I don't (and I doubt most folks here in America do - heck we can't even speak Spanish! ) I filter it, blacklist it, yet still get at least 20 a day. I notice , despite reporting it, that none of it shows up as Known Spam. Any thoughts on why that is?
Thanks,
ATHiker95

I previously used a filter in Outlook Express and stopped all Korean mail at the server but was disappointed that Mailwasher cannot do this at present although it is being considered for the future. I have decided to remain with Mailwasher and hope that my blacklist will eventually reduce the spam. Incidentily I do not use bounce as all the replies on the subject say it is a waste of time but automatically delete all blacklised items.
Hope this helps

ATHiker95,
I've set up a filter based on the characterset used. Not nice and might catch legit mails as well, but it works for me.
I look for headers containing
Content-Type: text/html; charset="euc-kr"
Content-Type: text/html; charset="ks_c_5601-1987" or
Content-Type: text/html; charset="koi8-r"
You might want to give it a shot?

I already use two filters using the character set which catches all the Korean mail but still lists it and shows it then to be deleted and blacklisted.
I am finding that the Korean mail continues to be sent, presumably by altering their address they continue to bombard us.
What Outlook Express did for me was to stop all the Korean mail at the server and when I was using OE I never saw any more Korean Mail.
I am loking forward to Mailwasher introducing that facility which they have indicated they intend to do sometime in the future.

These Korean emails are still on your email server when you see them displayed in Mailwasher.
If you don't want to see them - tick "do not display in list" under your filter>>options.

I have no "options" under Filters. I have options under blacklisted where I have ticked "auto delete blacklisted messages".
I am using Mailwasher pro.
Why am I missing this facility ?

Blair,
From the View menu, select "filter sidebar". This displays a list of your filters. Click on a filter, then click "edit".
You'll see that there are various "action" check boxes, one of which is "do not display e-mails in list" and another which is "mark for deletion". With those two selected you will never see an e-mail that matches the filter, provided you hit Process Mail before launching your e-mail programme.
Hope ye ken whit Ah'm oan aboot!

Neep_Heid,
I am sorry to say that since altering the filter I am still getting listed Korean spam. I have checked the characters I have listed both in the heading and the body of the message and they correspond.
What now??

Blair,
Is the problem that the filter isn't working (i.e. Korean spam is not being trapped by your filter) or is it being trapped but is appearing on your list with the word Filtered beside it?
I'm afraid I don't know enough about filtering spam from particular countries to answer you if it's the former.
Have you had a look at the "Gary's filters updated" thread?

Gregor,
Thanks for your reply. Yes I have looked at Grays Filters and also a number of topics on the same subject (auto deleting blacklisted mail) and I end up confused. A number of replies say that it is not possible to auto delete filtered items and then someone states that he has auto deleted filtered items!
And also someone stated that Mailwasher was proposing to add the facility soon of auto deleting filtered items.
For your understanding I was not blacklisting a language but blacklisting the character set they use and I could do this perfectely in Outlook Express

Blair,
Mailwasher definitely does not have the in-built ability to auto-delete filtered items (only blacklisted ones). Filtered items marked for deletion only "go" when Process Mail is hit. Mailwasher can be made to auto-process using a third-party application but I've never done this. It's in a thread somewhere.
It can, however, hide filtered items.
Sorry- don't know how to do the Korean character set bit.
Anyone else?
Gregor

Blair - you were filtering the header looking for a particular character set?
With Korean Spam you can filter for the character set. Have a look at the entire header and you will see 'charset=something' Just filter the entire header looking for that and it will work.
As stated, you cannot auto delete based on filters, although if you have ticked this filter for blacklist as well, and have enabled auto deleting of blacklisted messages, then the next time this email comes in again (from the same source) it will be auto deleted, as it has been added to your blacklist - Note it will be auto deleted based on the "from" and not on the filter paramaters.
Also, you say you can do same thing in Outlook Express_ to do this, you would need to have downloaded the emails to your hard drive to do this.
With Mailwasher, the email is not downloaded to your system.

Ah, thanks for this tip. I didn't notice that option. Although I'd prefer they not make their way in at all, at least this way I don't have to keep seeing them!

G'day,
My filter for deleting Korean and other Asian SPAM was ripped off from a Forté Agent filter - if you Google for korean spam in alt.usenet.offline-reader.forte-agent you will find many different approaches.
Here is what I use, as shown in the "Filter Description" pane in Mailwasher Pro:
If the Subject field contains the RegExpr "[-˙][-˙][-˙][-˙]" or the From field contains the RegExpr "[-˙][-˙][-˙][-˙]" then add the sender to the blacklist, mark the message as mail to be deleted and mark the message as mail to be bounced.
Essentially, it looks for (at least) four non-Latin characters in a row, in either the Subject or From fields of the email. IME, works 100%.
cheers,
Ross.
