Thankyou for visiting the site.

If you wish to notify me of new items to include in the startup program list, please observe the following as it makes my task of including them much simpler:

1) Search the existing list of programs by both name and executeable (*.exe) first to see if it's already present
2) Do not include items present in the "Close Program" window (Win9x/Me) or "Task Manager" (WinNt/2K/XP) window (both can be accessed via the CTRL+ALT+DEL key combination). The reason is that these windows (a) display the information differently and (display startup AND background tasks (running as a result of other programs and/or Services (in WinNT/2K/XP) - and these will not be incorporated into the list).

Non WinNT users:

Please use MSCONFIG to gather the information I need as it's the easiest. MSCONFIG is available for all Win9x/Me/XP users (Win95/2K user can use the respective versions from here).

You invoke it by clicking Start then Run. In the Open box, type msconfig.exe followed by enter. Once displayed, click on the "Startup" tab. You will see a list of items and the 2 columns I'm interested in are "Name" and "Command", ie:

Name/Startup Item -> Command
SystemTray -> SysTray.exe

Note: Win98 does not give the columns titles but they are in the same order, ie, the "Name" is on the left and "Command" is on the right.

For WinNT users:

Unless you use a startup manager such as StartMan you'll have to look in the registry. For information about the Windows registry and editing it's contents try here

To invoke the Registry Editor, click Start then Run. In the Open box, type regedit.exe followed by enter.

The keys you're interested in are as follows:-

HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunOnce
HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunServices
HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunServicesOnce
HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunOnce

You will see a list of items and the 2 columns I'm interested in are "Name" and "Data", ie:

Name -> Data
SystemTray -> "SysTray.exe"
