BHODemon Description: Try BHODemon - it's Free!
Think of BHODemon as a guardian for your Internet browser: it protects you from unknown Browser Helper Objects (BHOs), by letting you enable/disable them individually. BHODemon is free, runs in the "tray" area, and works on Windows 95 or later operating systems (in other words, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98SE, Windows ME, Windows NT4, Windows 2000, and Windows XP).
What is a Browser Helper Object?
A Browser Helper Object, or BHO, is just a small program that runs automatically every time you start your Internet browser. Usually, a BHO is installed on your system by another software program. For example, Go!Zilla, the downloading utility, installs a BHO created by Radiate (formerly Aureate Media); this BHO tracks which advertisements you see as you surf the Web.
The natural question is, what do BHOs do? The technical answer is "anything", but generally, it will have something to do with helping you browse the Internet. Of course, some BHOs are what is called "ad-ware" or "spyware": they do things like monitor the websites you visit and report this data back to their creators.
Although many people are extremely concerned about them because of the privacy issue, BHOs are not necessarily bad things, and most of them are well-intentioned and beneficial. For example, the P3P ("Platform for Privacy Preferences") program spearheaded by the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) and major vendors, including Microsoft, AT&T, and IBM, will be delivered as a BHO. Some BHOs, however, are placed secretly on your system, and there is certainly no technical reason why they could not be programmed to send information about your system (or your web surfing habits) over the Internet without your knowledge.
Also, there is no restriction on what a BHO can do your system; it can do anything any other program can do: read or write (or delete) anything on your system. Usually, software is installed on your system explicitly by you; when you do so, you are, in effect, saying that you trust the vendor. BHOs, however, have a history of being installed without the users knowledge (fine print notwithstanding)
Given that (a) BHOs can do absolutely anything to your system, and (b) they are often installed without your knowledge, there is a distinct potential for abuse by vendors. The problem is, until now you had no way of knowing which BHOs are on your machine, who put them there, and what they do. This is what BHODemon does - it lets you easily manage your BHOs, and tells you what each BHO on your system is doing.

BugOff Description: This little app disables 8 exploits that are commonly used by browser hijackers (including CWS), thus, protecting you from infection. This does not remove an existing infection! It is a preventative measure only and is a must for everyone that uses Internet Explorer. Microsoft has not yet developed security patches or hotfixes for most of these exploits. (One exception is ADODB.stream. See KB870669.)
1. mhtml protocol
2. ms-its protocol
3. ADODB.stream object
4. Microsoft.XMLHTTP object
5. Shell.Application object
6. its protocol
7. mk protocol
8. ms-itss protocol
Please read the side effects of disabling each exploit. Then disable them all. BugOff works on Windows 98 and higher. The VB6 runtime files should be installed before you install this program. BugOff requires administrative rights to run. Limited users will not be able to enable/disable the exploits.
SIDE EFFECTS
- Disabling the mhtml exploit will prevent you from reading .mht/.mhtml files or Outlook Express email.
- Disabling several other exploits may prevent the Windows Help system and some third-party application Help windows (i.e., Microsoft Antispyware) from displaying.
TIPS
- When you need to open .mht files or Outlook Express email, temporarily re-enable the mhtml exploit, do you work, and then disable it again to maintain security.
- If you find that a particular Help & Support, help, or information window does not display; temporarily re-enable some of the other exploits until the window displays properly. Be sure to disable them again when you are finished.
- Please install the KB870669 patch from Microsoft for the ADODB.stream object. Then use BugOff for dual protection against this exploit.

CookieWall Description: Online privacy is a big deal these days, with huge companies being formed every month to both protect and exploit information gathered about you. By far the most common method used to track individuals on the Internet is the 'Cookie', a small file stored on your machine with information provided by a website... While the majority of the websites out there use this tool as it was intended, more and more are exploiting it in ways that were never intended - that's where AnalogX CookieWall comes in.
AnalogX CookieWall allows you to quickly and easily decide which cookies can stay on your system, and which cookies should go - once you let CookieWall know which ones are unwelcome, it does the rest. CookieWall can be configured to delete cookies as soon as they arrive, to notify you of any new ones, or just que them up for you to check out at a later date.
CookieWall is currently only compatible with Microsoft Internet Explorer or derived versions (such as NeoPlanet); Netscape support should be available in the near future.

CWShredder Description: Trend Micro CWShredder is the premier tool to find and remove traces of CoolWebSearch – the name for a wide range of insidious browser hijackers– from your PC.
CWShredder removes these browser hijackers. CoolWebSearch installs dozens of bookmarks–mostly to porn Web sites–on your desktop, changes your home page without asking, and continually changes it back if you attempt to correct it. Furthermore, it significantly slows down the performance of your PC, and introduces modifications which cause Microsoft Windows™ to freeze, crash or randomly reboot.

CWShredder 2 Description: The CoolWebSearch Chronicles detail the variants of the browser hijacker known
as CoolWebSearch (CWS). CoolWebSearch is known to be one of the most difficult
spyware infections to detect and remove.
CoolWebSearch has evolved as a
series of ‘variants’, each somewhat different than its predecessors, with the
later variants significantly more complex to detect and remove. It is believed
that the reason why new variants of CoolWebSearch are regularly released is to
avoid or defeat attempts to remove it from a computer which it has infected. CWS
is a robust infection that exhibits robust intelligence, technical prowess and a
determination to survive removal attempts. CWS wants to live.
The
difficulty of removing CWS from a user's system is significant. In the early
variants, CWS was slightly tricky to remove, but it could be done, carefully, by
a knowledgeable Windows user. However, CWS has stepped up the battle and recent
variants are virtually impossible to remove manually. Some CWS variants even use
methods of hiding and running themselves that had never been used before in any
other spyware strains.
The chronological order in which the CWS variants
appeared is detailed here, along with the approximate dates when they appeared
online. However, since the programmers of CWS have released over two dozen
versions of their hijacker in such a short time, and are crunching out new ones
practically every week, this document might be out of date at times.
InterMute’s CWShredder tool to remove
CoolWebSearch is updated regularly when new variants emerge.
