In spam Tools > List Options button, I selected (after copying the one supplid with the program to the drive in case it needed specific structuring to the text file) a shared whitlist / blacklist on a usb flash drive, thinking that this might make my lists portable. It does not appear to work, so is that not possible yet, is there a workaround, or am I not doing it right?

Thanks Smile

Go to "Help" then "About"

At the bottom of the popup window, there will be a file listed that begins "C:\"
Click on that.

In the folder that opens, look for a file called blacklist.txt
Ironically, that will be your friends list as well as the blacklist. (And since spammers never put their real address in the "From" field, there is no point creating a blacklist unless you have an old boyfriend/girlfriend you want to avoid.)

You can put that file on your flash drive. If you are building a friends list while moving back and forth from work to home, you might want to put a shortcut to blacklist.txt on your desktop to make it quicker.

Only copy that file with MW completely shutdown.

There is info on using a shared black/friends list around if you try search here, the wiki or the MW help file, I just don't remember where I saw it.

Well, he can copy it, but he can't edit it with MWP open.

Alpha and Stan

I gather from your answers that there is no way to make Mailwasher look to the flash drive for this file, that I would copy the file back and forth between computers as I use mailwasher ...?

Thanks for the feedback, it is very much appreciated!

Can you put a shortcut in the Mailwasher file and have it find blacklist.txt on your flash drive if you are unplugging and reconnecting the flash drive all the time? or does that break the shortcut path?

If you copy any MW data file with MW open you get a copy of the last data written to the file, not necessarily the last data you or MW entered. Not sure what the result would be if MW decided to write while you were copying... it could cause corruption to the written file.

I just copied the file, actually the whole MW data directory since the training is much more effective than the blacklist between computers when I move around. I put it in a batch file so it was just a click.

Now on the Linux version I do the same with the Linux-MW data directory, still works well for mobile use and you don't end up with your computers out of sync.

That is kind of my question ... I realise that one would want to keep the flash drive plugged in the whole time Mailwasher was open - but how do you get Mailwasher to look at the flash drive instead of the default location for blacklist - whitelist - learning - well all of it. I don't care if Mailwasher is portable, I would just like what is learned on one computer to be easily synced to another computer, each with it's own installed MW. The easiest way to do this is have Mailwasher look to the flash drive for all of these files, so is the location hardcoded into mailwasher or is there an ini file somewhere that can be edited?

-Thanks

I think it is hard coded, you might be able to tweak windows to get it to redirect MW elsewhere but I don't know how.

I do know how to do it in Linux though...

Three things are needed:
  1. Win2K "or above" OS
  2. The drive which stores the users' data directory must be NTFS
  3. Apply the Sysinternals Junction command

A USB drive is a Remote Share and Windows Junction/symlinks don't work very predictably there. Also, don't ever use Junction on a machine where somebody else might use del or try to delete a junction from the file explorer. Results apparently are disasterous.

A bat to update the data from a USB keyfob or across the network is still the safest way to go, at least until MW allows us to specify the location of the data directory. That has been requested a number of times over the years, so maybe you can add it to the wish-list.

Thanks for the replies! What I have decided to do is just let each of the two computers 'learn' seperately. Smile

Thanks
