Hello All:
Anyone have any ideas on my latest issue below? I have three very large SCSI hard drives with only 41% used capacity. 81% of my system resources are free. I have 4Gigs of ram. Does anyone have any ideas? I tried the below links to no avail.
http://www.velocityreviews.com/forums/t206576-outlook-express-6-inbox-wont-show-itself.html

The below is the actual error message when I open Outlook Express. The error is sporadic. If I reboot Outlook Express functions normally.
Thanks in advance All.
PS: This forum is world class.

Check the hard drive for errors.

If you mean checking the drives for errors in terms of running a defrag and Chkdisk I have done that. No issues. Other ideas? Or other means of checking?

Well what it looks like, you changed the store directory yuo had your ourlook express messages in. Either that, or the directory got corrupted. What I would try is to create a new identity in OE, that is done by selecting file/identities/add new identity. If that works, your store directory is either moved or corrupted.

Hi Tailrotor,
Try creating a new identity. If OE opens correctly then we can look at retrieving your messages. If not then try the following:
- Go to Start, Search, All Files and Folders. Enter inbox.dbx as the search term. Click More Advanced Options and make sure Search Subfolders is checked, then click Search.
You should find only one instance of inbox.dbx. Right click the file in the Search window and select Open Containing Folder. When Windows Explorer opens up, note the name of the folder containing inbox.dbx and click the 'Up one folder' icon at the top of the window. Find the folder and rename it (just putting a letter 'X' at the start of the folder name will do).
Now try opening OE. If this makes no difference then you can go back and rename the folder back to the original name, but I would expect OE to open correctly, albeit with no messages showing. (We can fix that later).
Let me know how it goes. _________________ Never stop learning

Hello Mister2:
Good to chat with you again! I followed your directions with regard to renaming my inbox.dbx Renaming my inbox only made my messages disappear. I did not see any other changes. OE did open but as I said, the issue is sporadic. My inbox and sent messages work a great deal of the time.
When the error message takes place and my messages disappear I reboot my system and all is good again.
It sounds like you were expecting what I described above and have other steps for me to try.
I am you humble student and really appreciate your knowledge!

I looked at your link Mister2...thank you!
Though interesting/informative, I do not believe it pertains to my issue as it is for Windows XP. I am running Windows ME. The Microsoft link I found is as close to my specific issue as I have found at the moment.
However, I tried it and of course "mission failure!"
It seems I have another weird one. Keep me informed as to what you find and I will do the same.
All the Best.
Thank you
Tailrotor.

After a few months I am still working the issue! I never give up! My problem seems to stem from physical memory usage. After working/opening heavy programs MS Office, listening to music etc.., and then try to re-open Outlook Express it is then I get the error. For example, on boot up I have 93% system resources available; it is after I am working the computer hard I am left with minimal resources (19%). So the question now is, how do you make available or limit system resources as I think this may have been my problem all along.
This is not a ram issue (I now have 8 Gigs), but a system resource issue.
Thanks All

In particular read Exception No. 3:
“Windows Me and Windows 98 are not designed to handle more than 1 GB or RAM. More than 1 GB can lead to potential system instability.”
This may have some bearing on your problem.
I would guess that an application (or more than one) is terminating but not releasing the resources. Next time you get low on resources check in Task manager (Ctrl + Alt + Del) to see what processes are still running. You may find that parts of Office are in the list. Also things like FastFind, Spybot's Teatimer, Trojan Hunter's Guard and other programs can take up a lot of resources, even on XP.
Probably the best way is to boot up and immediately open Task manager. Click the Process Name title on the processes tab to sort in alphabetical order and note what is running. Then repeat after running normally for a few hours and see what else is showing. Right click and end the processes for those extra entries and see if OE opens correctly. _________________ Never stop learning

Hi Mister2:
Glad to see you on board still with regard to my madness!
I knew the ME ram limitation. I should have been more specific (my fault).
I run multiple OS's (using a program called System Commander), on the same computer (OS2, Linux Red Hat, XP and ME) so the ram is used with the OS's that can take full advantage of the ram. I did limit the ram usage as outlined in your link you sent me recently (but I did it long ago). Also, Ctrl, Alt, Del operates differently under ME opposed to how it functions in XP. Under ME, it will reboot the computer and/or close programs. In XP Ctrl, Alt, Del does what you outlined.
I am not sure still what the issue is. OE claims low memory when the error occurs and that is when I looked at system performance and saw the 19% available resources left. The system performance is looked at (while using ME) by right clicking on: my computer icon, then properties, then performance.
If I re-boot the error always disappears. It is only after opening other taxing programs and eventually closing them and re-opening OE; do I get the error. I still feel it is a base memory problem. What do you think?
Thank you

I have been reading here but have to go to work now. There are links at the bottom of the page to other sites which look interesting. I'll have a read of those when I get in. _________________ Never stop learning

Mister2:
You find it intriging...I find it maddening! However, as I always said, I admire your tenacity! Of course my computer problems always seem to be the most nutso as you may remember?
Eventhough my gut tells me it is a memory issue, I am still trying to always keep in mind in may be an Outlook Express issue. Microsoft had a
service bulletin that addressed my very issue. However, I tried it long ago and it did nothing. I will enclose it again for your review.

Keep me infomed as I will do the same.
Have a good week
