What exactly is BITS/AU and how can I tell if it applies to me and the windows update installation problem I have?

BITS/AU stands for:
Background Intelligent Transfer Service/Automatic Updates

Since you didn't state your problem, the rest of the question is unanswerable...

This is what I needed to get Updates working. When I changed the registry permissions and made sure BTS stayed on (maybe it was in manual instead of automatic - I think it may time out?) I was able to get service pack 3 installed when I'd struggled for days. Hence the sign-in name.

THANK YOU MEKONG DELTA >>> what's the significance of your sign-in name?

Pardon me for jumping in and adding my two cents:

some file, but I can't find which one (if even it's that)):

That's from page 1 of this topic! Wink

Wondered if you ever resolved it!? Laughing

I only asked, because I went to the linked thread and then decided to have a look for a solution.

I found the following:

Date of last scan in System Status does not change after running a virus scan

Obviously, I haven't read through the approximately 70 pages to see if you did resolve it - if you have, just ignore this post! Laughing

Kindest regards,

Oh geez -- I remember that! I fixed that about 4 years ago by changing a binary
entry in the Registry.

I have NAV2007 now and I've had no problems.

Talk about a blast from the past!

Greetings,

Ah - well, I'm glad you got it resolved - before upgrading! Laughing

Serves me right for waiting this long to actually read that!

Kindest regards,

Dragan Glas

Ok had one system that i tried every thing in this thread that applied to xp updateing. and still had to do updates manually.
but i ran a small free program called:
Dial-a-fix 0.60.0.24
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/Dial-a-fix.shtml
And now auto updates work just fine!!
