What exactly is BITS/AU and how can I tell if it applies to me and the windows update installation problem I have?

BITS/AU stands for:
Background Intelligent Transfer Service/Automatic Updates
Since you didn't state your problem, the rest of the question is unanswerable... _________________ TF-116 Gamewarden (PBRs) RivRon 59 -- 'Nam '69

This is what I needed to get Updates working. When I changed the registry permissions and made sure BTS stayed on (maybe it was in manual instead of automatic - I think it may time out?) I was able to get service pack 3 installed when I'd struggled for days. Hence the sign-in name.

Pardon me for jumping in and adding my two cents:

That's from page 1 of this topic!
Wondered if you ever resolved it!?
I only asked, because I went to the linked thread and then decided to have a look for a solution.
I found the following:
Date of last scan in System Status does not change after running a virus scan
Obviously, I haven't read through the approximately 70 pages to see if you did resolve it - if you have, just ignore this post!
Kindest regards,

Oh geez -- I remember that! I fixed that about 4 years ago by changing a binary
entry in the Registry.
I have NAV2007 now and I've had no problems.

Greetings,
Ah - well, I'm glad you got it resolved - before upgrading!
Serves me right for waiting this long to actually read that!
Kindest regards,
