out of no where my computer did not start up and i got the blue screen of death.

system restore did not work...and I gave up after other failed attempts and formatted my drive

I installed a fresh version of xp prof and when I go to update my sound card driver it automatically shuts down. I stopped to automatic shut down to receive the blue screen message and it has something to do with the sound card.

Everytime it attempts to install the hardware (santa cruz) and gets to Multimedia audio controller...IT STOPS.

I need assistance to get past this. Thanks in advance.

Let's test the hardware and software. Go to Start, then Run and type the following into the run box:

dxdiag

and tap <Enter>. That will open a multimedia test that tests the hardware, software and drivers. Run all the tests in all the tabs and see what it says.

It sounds like you may need a new sound card. The Santa Cruz cards were excellent, but haven't been make in 4 or 5 years now, so there is a real chance the card is either dying or dead and needs replacement.

well, that makes sense - nothing in sound because no drivers are installed.

s2g, are you attempting to install drivers with devices attached to your sound card / sound output at the back panel? I am wondering if something is shorting out and making the installation go weird.

Also, are you installing off, say, an install CD, or did you download the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website?

i am attempting to install the drivers with the regular speaker plug (green thing) in there.

I do not have the disk as this computer is old but works very well until now. I am trying to download from the dell site. I have tried different drivers for my system but nothing has worked. I even took out the sound and re-inserted it to no avail.

Any guesses?

Hi s2g,

Sorry for the delay in reply but we had to do some research.

Lets make sure the old drivers are gone and that you're installing the right drivers.

]Please copy the fix to Notepad/Word, or print it, because you won't always have internet access!

To do a clean uninstall and reinstall of your video drivers, follow the following steps:

1. Download and install the free version of Driver Cleaner from here:

http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDownload/Driver-Cleaner-Professional-Download-18224.html

2. Download the latest version of your soundcard's drivers here:
ftp://ftp.turtlebeach.com/pub/tbs/santacru/sc_4161s.zip

3. Uninstall the audio drivers using the Windows Add/Remove Control Panel.

Note: There may be a message asking if you want to use the default Windows drivers, just reply Yes.

4. Boot into Safe Mode and run Driver Cleaner, run it a couple of times until you are sure that all remnants of the old drivers are gone, and if you had other soundcards installed at some time in the past, also run Driver Cleaner to get rid of them as well.

5. Boot into regular Windows and install your new audio drivers.

Tell me if the soundcard is working correctly now. If not, also tell me if you have any other soundcards you can try to get to work as the chance that this one is dead is very big.

Greets, John.

It is not working properly. When installing the new driver the tray icon says "FOUND NEW HARDWARE...SANTA CRUZ....MULTIMEDIA CONTROLLER" and that is when it stalls and automatically restarts.

I turned off the automatic restart to get the blue screen which shows the same stop 0x07e and the tbcspud.sys

I do not have another sound card to try.

Hi,

The tbcspud.sys driver belongs to the Santa Cruz card.

Go to Start > Run. In the box, type eventvwr. Look at the System and Application log files and report any that are red. We need to know the Event ID and Source.

Greets, John.
