|
|
I've had this computer for over a year now with no problems, but I noticed over the last two weeks that my computer freezes 5-10 minutes after booting up. Then recently, I tried to boot it up and it would just be blank(wouldn't even go to windows). I realized that my power supply was bad(the fan wasn't moving anymore!), so I replaced it. Now it boots all the way, but it still freezes after 5-10 minutes, so I checked the ram. I found out that one of my dim slots were bad, so I just ran memory on the good slot. Everything ran fine after awhile(almost 30 minutes), but it still froze. Do you think the motherboard is trashed, or do I need to do a thorough cleaning of my computer? Or do you think one of my cards(i.e. video) may have gone bad? Please LMK what you think I should do. Any & all help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Patrick

Are all your fans working? Check the CPU fan, you might have an overheating problem. I've experience the same before,

I checked my fans just to make sure and fortunately they are okay. For some reason, the only fans I have are the processor and power supply fans. It was working okay for the past year, but should I go ahead and install a couple of fans anyway? Also, I did notice something new when I used it today. It restarted twice while I was checking my email. Also, I think my network card may be faulty because I have to wiggle my cable and or card to ensure an internet connection. Could a faulty ethernet card cause my computer to freeze and/or restart? Any help and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I take it that you have ran the necessary check: virusscan and hijackthis? And everthing was ok?
Yea, sometimes a loose connection on any of trhe PCI cards can cause ithe PC to act weird. Especially, video cards where they will not boot at all. Check all the cards that are plugged and make sure they are snuggly inserted. Also, check all power cable connections to all your peripherals. What was the last thing you installed or removed before all these happened? Did you remove a peripheral but forgot to unistall drivers and associated utilities?

List all the peripherals that you have installed on the computer and what kind of motherboard and number of RAMs and also, what is the wattage on your power supply?

Thanks for the advice. I did a virus scan and a hijack log and everything is okay. I actually had the computer for almost 2 years though. It's a Micron PC Millenia. The only thing I added was a cd-rw drive( but that was over a year ago), and replace the 2 ram factory ram sticks with a 512k. What do I need to do now? Thanks again for all your help!

Try putting the old memmory back in. See if that clears the problem. You may have a timing issue with the new ram. _________________ Failure: When your best just isn't good enough.

OK, I did what you suggested. Now it just freezes after 5 minutes. And when I put the 512k stick back in, it won't freeze anymore; it will restart automatically after 20-25 minutes! Now I'm really confused! . What do you think the best thing for me to do is now? Thanks for everybody helping me!

OK, I did what you suggested. With the old memory, it now freezes after 5 minutes. With the 512k memory, it will work fine, then it will automatically restart after 20 minutes(sometimes an error report will pop up beforehand and after sending the error report, then it will restart). What should I do now? Should I just buy another computer? Please LMK what you think is best, or this problem is still fixable. Thanks to everyone that's helped me.
