Tried turning off all those start ups with msconfig but still can't defrag. how can I get computer to realize that files are gone? and then defrag? or are the files still there somewhere and I just can't access them? Hi naivecomputer, and Welcome to CC Very Happy

Did you right click on the Recycle Bin and choose 'Empty recycle Bin'? If not then the files are still on your hard drive.

Also, delete your temporary internet files:

In Internet Explorer 7 go to Tools, Internet Options, and click Delete in the Browsing History section. Then click Delete All.

In Firefox go to Tools, Options, Advanced, Clear Now.

You could also navigate to the C:\Temp folder and delete any files or folders in there (don't delete the Temp folder itself). Click on one file, press Ctrl + A to select everything, hold the Shift key down and press the Delete key. Click Yes when asked to confirm the deletion. This will bypass the Recycle Bin and should give you more space.

You can also use XP's Disk Cleanup.

Open My Computer, right click on Drive C, click on Properties.

On the Properties window, Click the Disk Cleanup button.

Check everything that has greater than 0 KB, EXCEPT, "Compress old files".

Also look through Add or Remove Programs for programs you no longer use and remove them. Also if you have Java installed look for Java(TM) # Update #, if you have more than one remove all but the most resent one which should be Java(TM) 6 Update 5.

If you ran through Disk Cleanup, and your hard drive is still that full, you need to uninstall something. Go through Control Panel > Add and Remove Programs, and delete programs you installed that you no longer need.

If you have copied music or video files to this drive, delete them - they take up lots of room. If you have email with large attachments saved, delete them. If you have a bunch of high resolution photos saved, delete them.

Then empty the Recycle Bin, boot into Safe Mode, and try to defrag again.

Sadly, while 20Gb used to be considered more than any one will ever need, it is nothing these days. You need to add another HD, and use that for your programs and files. You can then move your Page File to the second drive too (actually, that would the be very first file I would put on that 2nd drive, if me).

The most common reason defrag won't start, other than a lack of free space, is that there may be an error on the drive. So, that should be checked. Go to Start, click on Run and type the following in the Run box:

cmd

and tap <Enter>. A black command box will open, and at the prompt (>) type the following:

chkdsk /r

and tap <Enter>. Important - please note the space between the "k" and the "/". You will get a message that chkdsk cannot run but can be scheduled for the next boot. Choose Y, and once the message pops up that chkdsk has been scheduled for the next boot, reboot the system.

The normal boot sequence will change, and chkdsk will start before Windows loads to the desktop. This will take a half-hour or more to run, and will fix most common fixable issues on your hard drive related to the file system.

After it finished, and automatically reboots again, try defrag once again. Either there was an error preventing it from running or not. So, either it will start or not.

Try it, you don't lose anything by doing so, and it might work.

Thank you both - I have already moved my files to teh 1 GB hard drive that I bought the other day - I don't have any music or photos - I will check to see if there are any programs that I can delete but I only use this computer for work and I don't think I have anyhing extra on it.

I am going to check on the old emails that I have saved and dump them.

Then I will try the chk disk method and get back to you.

Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate it.

Do note it can take several hours for chkdsk to complete, at some points, it may appear hung - just be patient.

But PCB brings up a point - we've been focusing on free disk space (which is still a problem), so to back up a bit, you say you cannot defrag, why? Are you getting an error? What does it say? I still suspect it is low disk space, because it is low. Defrag needs lots of space to temporarily place the fragments while it is sorting them all out.

If chkdsk is fine, you may have to uninstall one of your favorite programs just to make room for defrag to work in, then reinstall it when defrag is done. If your defrag program consolidates free space, then the fresh install should be relatively fragment free.

Hi again,

I ran chkdsk as you sugested. It worked fine - but when I defrag it stillsays some file could not be defragmented - and it only defrags about 13%. This is what it's been doing for a long time now - I don't have a lot of programs on my computer and haven't downloaded anything new - but I will check and try to delete some programs - meanwhile if yo can think of anything else plz let me know -

Thx again!

When it (and what is "it" - what defrag program?) stops at 13%, what happens? Defrag can certainly take a very long time (hours) too, especially if a crowded disk. Unless you see "not responding" or some other indication that the program is not running, no drive activity - not even occasional flickers - then I would just let it run - overnight even.

As for files being open, you are defragging in Safe Mode, right? If a "Normal" boot, all kinds of files will be in use and cannot be defragged. Safe Mode only loads the bare essentials.

How big is your page file?

Are you using Windows& own defragmenter? Yes, this one cannot always defragment everything, and I recommend to use a different (but proven) defragmenter.

Try Diskeeper Lite; you can find version 7 on many download locations (check Google).

If you have any Intel parts on your machine, you can download Diskeeper Lite version 9 from here Intel Desktop Utilities. This is a very large download! Find Diskeeper in the 3rdparty folder.

naivecomputer,

There is one other thing that no one has mentioned yet. Something I do from time to time.

Windows when it updates it self, stores backup folders of the files updated in the C:\windows folder so if the update causes problems it can be backed out. On my system these backup folder take up 10436KB of disk space. These folders are easy to identify. Here is a list of what is on my system so you can see what to look for:

$NtUninstallKB937894$ File Folder 2/21/2008 22:20
$NtUninstallKB941568$ File Folder 2/21/2008 22:20
$NtUninstallKB941569$ File Folder 2/21/2008 22:20
$NtUninstallKB941644$ File Folder 2/28/2008 21:16
$NtUninstallKB942763$ File Folder 2/28/2008 21:16
$NtUninstallKB943055$ File Folder 2/21/2008 17:30
$NtUninstallKB943485$ File Folder 2/28/2008 21:16
$NtUninstallKB944653$ File Folder 2/28/2008 21:16
$NtUninstallKB946026$ File Folder 2/21/2008 17:31

It should be safe enough to delete all of them. If your want only keep the most resent ones.

Just be careful and delete only the folders that start with $NtUninstall.

Hello again,

Yes the defragmenter is Windows Xp's own. When it runs it runs for about 10 -15 minutes maybe less and then it just stops and says there are files on yr. computer that could not be defragmented and shows me a report.
I will run in safe mode this time to se if it works.
I will also behappy to get rid of those uninstall files but how do I find them?

Thanks again!

I will also behappy to get rid of those uninstall files but how do I find them?
You can do a search for $NtUninstallKB* and delete those found, or, CCleaner is a great disk cleaning program that is excellent at cleaning the system of 1000s of temporary files, including all history, old logs, Recycle Bin contents, cache and these hotfix installer files. During installation, uncheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbar. Before first use, go to Options > Settings > Advanced and ensure Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours is unchecked. To delete the above mentioned, ensure Hotfix Uninstallers is checked. To delete all "tracking" cookies, (which I urge you do), you must delete all cookies, so ensure the Cookies setting remains checked. Ensure you know your site credentials (user name and password) for sites you frequent; you will have to login again at next visit. Beginners and experts alike will benefit from the excellent, CCleaner Beginner's Guide.

Windows Defrag is fine, for now - you don't need to be downloading any more files at the moment - It is not the best, but probably the safest, since it is not too aggressive. It also does not consolidate free space - which can be a problem with small and crowded drives.

There are many good commercial and free defrag programs, including that mentioned. JKDefrag is good, and fully automatic - start it, and it defrags all your drives with no user intervention. Works in Safe Mode too - where defragging should be done anyway.

I have been testing the new defrag from Piriform, the folks that bring the CCleaner, called Defraggler. I like it, but it is a little slow right now - but they are working on it. However, I must warn, this is still a Beta.
