Ok, so Norton is messed up, and any help would be much appreciated.

When ever I try to run a scan, I get an error message that reads: "Could not start scan. Scan engine returned error 0x2." This has been happening since I was infected with a virus, which norton auto-detected and tried to delete, although it was unable until I stopped the process it was running. Then Norton got rid of it.

Now, the process that it was running was cleverly disguised. It was the process svchost.exe. except that it was running from my account, not SYSTEM or Local Service or Network Service. I realized this as the problem, and shut it down.

Now, however, every time I start up my computer, I get the error message as it boots "Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click search." I have no idea why this would keep popping up, and I would like it to go away. I'd also like to get norton running, I feel kinda naked without being able to run scans when I want.

Oh, btw, I don't have the install disk for Norton, so an Uninstall-Reinstall is not an option. The copy of Norton is a school copy, from U. of Pittsburgh, and I don't have it with me, now that I am home for the summer.

Thanks in advance,
~jack

Windows cannot find C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe because you have deleted it. Wink

You do not need to re-install your Norton product. Instead, you need your Windows install disk so you can replace C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe. Wink

There are a number of viruses which can infect this file. After cleaning it, you need to re-install it.

Try to boot into safemode to do the re-install.

Tap F8 repeatedly at system boot until the safemode screen comes up. Follow the instructions.

1. Right click on 'My Computer' and select 'Manage.'
2. Select Services and Applications->Services.
3. Right click Symantec Antivirus (in the services list) and select
'Stop.'
4. After the service stops, right click Symantec Antivirus again and
select 'Start.'

Thank you so much for answering such an old post.

I had the "scan engine failed to start and returned error 0x2", but no others.

It had not occurred to me to restart the service, et voila, it worked!

Oops. I meant "Could not start scan. Scan engine returned error 0x2."
