Hi, My Symantec AV found an attempt by this malware to infect my computer. The AV attempts to clean and quarantine failed but acces was denied, see the attached WORD file with screenshots of the AV notices. I then followed your malware removal checklist intructions, here are my results:

1) A brief but informative description of your problem.

Quote:
- SEE ABOVE.

2) A summary of the anti-malware tools you have used to complete your preliminary scans. You may also describe anything unusual you may have encountered while running your scans.
Quote:
- see below, I ran:

    2a) CCleaner
    2b) ATF Cleaner
    2c) Ad-Aware
    2d) SpyBot S&D
    2e) Windows Defender
    2f) Trend Micro online AV
    2g) Malwarebytes AntiTrojan scan

3) A summary of any additional steps that you may have performed on your own that were not included in the Malware Removal Procedure
Quote:
- I did not do anything outside of your instructions

4) Your pre-scan (reference) HijackThis log - hijackthisref.log (reflects the state of your system before any automatic removal tools were run) ** Not necessary, if you have already posted a log in your current HJT topic.
Quote:
- i had this but it was gone after i ran the post removal HJT log so only the current post auto removal HJT list exists, see 5 below

5)Your post-scan HijackThis log - hijackthis.log (reflects the state of your system after completion of malware removal programs) [b]
Quote:
- see below for post auto removal HJT log:

Sorry for the delay

1. Please download the Killbox.

    1)Save it to the desktop
    2) Rt Click->>Extract all->.Extract it to your Desktop
    3) Double Click Killbox.exe to run it
4)Select "Delete on Reboot", and then select "All files".
    5) Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

      c:\documents and settings\all users\_qbothome\_qbotinj.exe
      c:\documents and settings\all users\_qbothome\_qbot.dll

    6) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
    7) Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button.  Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt.

2. Rerun Hijackthis (scan only) and place checks beside the following entries
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "c:\documents and settings\all users\_qbothome\_qbotinj.exe" "c:\documents and settings\all users\_qbothome\_qbot.dll" /c "c:\program files\adobe\reader 8.0\reader\reader_sl.exe"

Close all other open windows except Hijackthis and Select "Fix checked"

Close Hijackthis ->> Reboot your PC ->> Rerun Hijackthis and post a fresh Hijackthis log

Hi bamajim,

Thanks for your help.

I followed your instructions and when I tried to use the paste from clipboard in the file menu nothing was pasted and killbox wouldn't run (I verified that I did copy the two files including their path to ther clipboard by opening WORD and pasting the clipboard entries there).

So instead, I tried to use the single file option and delete each file entry individually (I copied the full file path), by not rebooting after the first file was processed. I then got an error message from Killbox (see attached screenshot) which read "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!"

What now?

I've also included an updated HJT log here...

The pending operations error is nothing to be concerned about. But the failure of Killbox to work is. Let's do this another way.

Please download Combofix and save to your desktop:

Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop
    Close any open browsers.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the contents of the C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Hi Bamajim,

Thanks again for your help.

The first time I ran combofix it went through stage_16 and then hung and I had to do a hard reboot. I then ran it a second time and it ran to completion and automatically displayed the log file. When I went to copy the contents of the log file to post it here I was able to do the CTRL-C to copy the contents but my system again hung when I moved my pointer to the quick launch bar to open a browser and I again had to do a hard reboot. After that boot I was able to copy the contents of the log file, here it is:

1. Open NotePad (not wordpad). Copy and paste the following into Notepad (But not the word Code)

Code:
Folder::
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\_qbothome

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"Adobe Reader Speed Launcher"=-

Save the File as CFScript(exactly as shown no spaces) ->> Save it to your Desktop

Using the Image as a reference, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
image

You will be prompted to run Combofix again, Do so
Following the same rules as indicated in my first post
Then post the contents of the C:\ComboFix.txt log in your reply
