Over the last 24 hrs my wife's laptop has been Hijacked by several Trojans that throw persistant popups, and slow programs to a crawl. The only way to access the internet is in safe mode. I'll follow the Getting Expert Help With Your HijackThis Log posting proceedures from here:

1-Persistant popups, Windows explorer not launching properly, Windows Security Center warnings redircting to SPYAXXE spyware removal products. Desktop Wallpaper is invaded by a message that states: WARNING:SPYWARETHREAT DECTECTED ON YOUR PC... CLICK HERE TO SCAN PC FOR SPYWARE.

2. Started with Spybot and Adware- ran free scan and virus removal using AVG Grisoft. 9 infections discovered and quarantined. Still persistant problems. Downloaded HiJack This, ran scan and logs (see below) and finally ran Smitfraudfix.exe in safe mode.

Smitfraudfix was NOT able to complete Cleanup Process 100%. The following message was displayed.

C:/DOCUME~1\JENNIE~\LOCALSA~1\TEMP\~DFEF5B.tmp
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

Shortly thereafter a Windows Security Center Popup appeared in a red text box displaying the following message:

WindowsSecurity Center system warning
ALERT DETAILS
File:
stcloader.exestcloa~1.exe
THREAT:
2nd Thought

3. No other scans or removal products used.

After completing Smitfraud.exe scan and registry clean I rebooted in normal mode.

Desktop still displaying same spyware message

Within seconds AVG detected:

C\WINDOWS\system32\vtlJoMGAq.dll
Threat Name:Win32/Heur

I also received a RUNDLL error box
Error loading: C\WINDOWS\system32\mnsjfpga.dll

I'm at a loss to try anything else. Any advice would be helpful.

If it's at all possible, could you do a scan with HijackThis in normal mode, then post the results here?

You're Ready for cleaning. Thumbs Up

At CastleCops we screen all HijackThis logs for errors, out-of-date versions, unupdated operating systems, omissions and P2P applications; getting you [READY] for cleaning by our 1st Responders and Security Experts. Now you wait for one of them to come help you.

Hi wheresgrant,

Welcome to CastleCops!

I go by markamus here. I will be glad to assist you with your computer problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you want your problems solved quickly, and I will work hard to help you.

Please observe these rules while we work:

  1. I will be working on your malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues with your machine.
  2. If you don't understand something, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  3. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  4. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  5. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absense of symptoms does not mean everything is clear!

If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly Smile

Please download Combofix from one of these locations:

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

* Take note that the links are case sensitive

Save ComboFix to the desktop.

Note: It is important that it is saved directly to, and run from your desktop.

In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it as this is a new version.

* Close any open browsers.
* Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

1. Double click on combo.exe & follow the prompts.
2. When finished, it will produce a logfile located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
3. Post the contents of that log in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause your system to stall/hang. Do not proceed with the rest of the fix if you fail to run combofix

Thanks,

markamus

markamus...

thanks for the reply... I've been waiting patiently. Smile

I will try to download Combofix.exe from any of the links you provided but I may run into difficultly. The behavior from this virus is very intelligent. I can surf all over the web, however whenever I try to access this site, research anti-spyware programs or download anything remotely dealing with an antivirus program the browser stops cold in it's tracks. I may have to download this to another PC and transfer via flash memory.

Any suggestions? BTW, AVG is identifying this as a Win32/Heur infection.

Hi wheresgrant,

If you have access to another PC with internet access and a thumbdrive or other means of flash memory, download Combofix to the drive and manually transfer it over to the infected PC. Still save the file to the Desktop and continue with the instructions above.

You will need to print out the instructions or save them to the thumbdrive so you can still access them on the infected PC.

Let me know if you have any problems.

Thanks,

markamus

Sorry.. Combofix.exe won't run. I transferred via thumb drive to the desktop. I've tried normal mode, safe mode. You can click . the icon, select 'Run As' nothing launches. Also I can launch a browser and typein any of the three addy's you provide and the page won't display. As I said, the defensive moves of this infection are mindboggling

Hi wheresgrant,

Try renaming Combofix.exe on your thumbdrive before the file transfer. Change the name from Combofix.exe to Combo-fix.exe. Note the addition of the dash in the name.

Then try re-running the newly renamed Combo-fix.exe on the infected PC from the Desktop.

Thanks,

markamus

Before we go any further, I need you to install Recovery Console to your computer.

This is purely a precautionary procedure, but it is essential.

There are some new infections going round that damage your ability to boot if they are removed. Whilst I don't see signs of them on your computer, it's always easier to be cautious now than sorry later.

Recovery Console gives us the ability to recover your computer if such a thing happens.

Nothing is going to change on your computer other than we're going to install Recovery Console.

  • Download combofix.exe by sUBs to your Desktop (it must be in this location).
  • Alternate Download
  • If you already have a previous version, delete it and download a new version.
  • Do not attempt to run Combofix other than in the method described below.
  • Go to Microsoft's website
  • Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

  • Download the file & save it as it's originally named, to your Desktop.

  • Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.
  • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix.
  • When prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install Microsoft Recovery Console.
  • When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open.
  • Please post the contents of that log.

Please do not shutdown or reboot your machine until we have reviewed the log.
