|
|
I asked the question below back in Jan 2008, but never got a solution to it. I'm resubmitting it to see if there is a way to solve the issue:
------------------------------------------
On my laptop, I am running Vista with all current updates. I have NIS 2008 on the laptop and when I boot up, I get the message that "I have turned off Norton Firewall, Norton Antispam, Norton AntiVirus, etc". I have checked the Options in NIS and everything is ON. What could be causing this problem on the Vista machine. I also have NIS 2008 on my desktop and do not get this problem (It's a WinXP machine).
-----------------------------------------------
Thanks for any insights.

Gumboman | Hi Gumboman,
This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team responding to your post regarding Norton Internet Security 2008. The problem you describe is usually caused by your installation of Norton Internet Security not having the latest updates applied, or the updates did not apply correctly.
To resolve this issue, please open Norton Internet Security, and then click on "Run LiveUpdate" on the left side of the window. When LiveUpdate has completed, you may be prompted to restart. If you are not prompted to restart, do so anyway and then run LiveUpdate again.
After the completion of the updates, please restart your computer in Windows Safe Mode and run a Full System scan from Norton internet Security.
After the scan has completed, if any infections are found, please have Norton remove the threats.
Next, go back into Norton Internet Security and make sure that the "Personal Firewall," Intrusion Prevention" and "Spyware Protection" are turned On.
Next, go into the Windows Security Center and make sure that the Windows Firewall is not enabled. If you click on the arrow next to "Firewall protection," it should report that Norton Internet Security is protecting you.
Please follow the process I describe above and let me know if your issue is resolved.
Thank you,
Mike

Mike,
I followed your instructions except for two items;
One, in NIS 2008, I do not see an option for "Spyware Protection", where is that in NIS Options?
Two, In Windows Security Center, Windows Firewall is "off", clicking the arrow next to Windows Firewall, does not show an item that says "Norton Internet Security is protecting you".
What am I missing in these two items? This is a Vista machine will all latest updates.

Mike,
After following the instructions and restarting the computer, the pop-up messages are still there! What's next to try?

Hi Charlie,
If you ran the scan in Safe Mode after running LiveUpdate and are still having problems with pop-ups, the first thing I would suggest that you do is to clear all temporary internet files, cookies, etc from all of your browsers, and make sure that the pop-up blocker is enabled on those browsers as well.
Next, please check the "Programs and Features" Control Panel in Vista and make sure that there are no other anti-virus or internet security applications that provide real-time scanning, installed on your Vista system, as they can cause conflicts with Norton internet Security.
If the problem still persists and the Windows Firewall still does not show Norton Internet Security as your Firewall, then your installation may have become corrupted. To fix this problem, please follow the steps below to properly uninstall and reinstall Norton Internet Security 2008.
1. Click on the following link to download the Norton Removal Tool.
Norton Removal Tool and Instructions
2. After you run the tool, please restart your computer. Then log in to Windows again and run the removal tool again. Restart your computer after it is finished running the second time as well.
3. Make sure that your internet connection is working properly, and then reinstall Norton Internet Security 2008. Towards the end of the installation process, the LiveUpdate feature will automatically run and download and install updates to both the program files and definition files.
4. After the installation is complete, launch Norton Internet Security and then click on the
"Norton internet Security" tab at the top of the window. Click the arrow next to "Settings" and make sure that "Automatic LiveUpdate" is turned On.
5. Next, click on the 'Web Browsing" option and then make sure the 'Personal Firewall" is turned On.
6. Lastly, go into the "Windows Firewall" Control Panel and make sure that it is reporting that Norton internet Security is managing your firewall.
If Windows Vista still reports that your Firewall is Off, etc, then that points to a problem with Vista. Please make sure that you run Windows Update and let me know the outcome.
I would also suggest that once you have reinstalled Norton Internet Security, that you try running the Comprehensive Scan in Safe mode to make sure that you are not infected.
Thank you,

Mike,
I completely uninstalled Norton Add0n 2008 and NIS 2008, restarting the computer after each uninstall. I then reinstalled the latest version of NIS 2008, restarted, then installed Norton Addon 2008, restarted. I did not get the popup messages, and upon checking in Windows Security Center (this is a Vista Laptop), Norton Internet Security was listed under Firewall as reporting that it was turned on.
So, everything appears to be working now on the Laptop.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Michael,
Well, I think we solved one problem and created another. Since I uninstalled NIS 2008 and reinstalled, I can no longer access my "E" drive on my desktop from the laptop (this was working fine until the reinstall). My setup was; (with 3 partitions on the desktop drive);
I am running WinXP with all latest updates on desktop (no SP3), and am running Vista on the laptop (no SP1). I have NIS 2008 running on both machines.
- I have the "E" drive setup as "shared" on the desktop
- I have the IP address for the laptop setup in the "trusted" area of NIS on the desktop
- I have the "E" drive mapped on the laptop as follows: Z \\desktop computer name\drive E name (E))
When looking in Computer, the mapped E drive has a Red "X" on it. Clicking on the drive produces the following error box:
----------------------------------
Restoring Network Connection
Not enough server storage is available to process this command.
This connection has not been Restored.
----------------------------------
And, I cannot access the E drive on my desktop from the laptop. What do I need to do to get this fixed?
Appreciate any assistance.
Gumboman

Hi Gumboman,
If you have already trusted both computer in the Norton personal Firewall, and setup your shares in XP and Vista, then the issue is not related to Norton Internet Security.
As a test, please try disabling the Norton Firewall and see if you can access your shared drives. Also, the "shortcut" on your desktop, may need to be recreated. Have you tried browsing for the shared drive through Computer and then mapping it again?
If turning off the Norton firewall resolves the issue, please go back to the Firewall "Settings" category and choose "Reset," which will reset all of your Firewall Rules. You will then need to re-configure the Firewall and Trust both machines again.
The 'Spyware" setting is located under the 'Settings" category under the Norton Internet Security tab.
Let me know what you discover.
lastly, please do a search on Microsoft TechNet for the error message related to "Not enough server storage is available to process this command." There is some information out there that will explain this problem for you.
Thanks
