Hiya Mister2,

Had a few probs but got there in the end. Just hope I have done right.

1. Killed AluSchedulerSvc.exe and deleted Live Update

2. lusetup.exe ........ now I was unsure what to do as a box came up called Application Maintenance. Had to choose between Modify, Repair or Remove ....... I chose Repair

3. Copy and pasted Product Inventory to the location you said, and it asked me if I wanted to replace the existing file 512 bytes with this one 29.3kb ......... I chose yes.

No probs with Step 8.

Started Live Update from within NIS. It downloaded 3 different things, if I remember rightly they were all critical updates. Had to restart for updates to take effect or whatever they call it.

Now, the fun started. Logged in as normal and Windows Installer Box came up saying Preparing to install, then gathering info. Then, another box came up saying: Feature u r trying to use is on a CD Rom. Insert the ccCommand disc and click ok. I put the NIS Upgrade 2008 disc in.

I hope to god I have done right. I'm not religious either.
I am dreading your reply so don't shout too loud at me lol.

Sorry for the delay but the forum went walkabout. Confused

I don't (often) shout at the folk I'm helping. If I mess things up then I shout at myself and beat myself with a wet lettuce. Shocked

But enough of my hobbies. 3 questions:

1. How's your system running now?
2. Is Norton behaving itself?
3. Out of curiosity, could you do another search for LiveUpdate and see if it has reappeared in the C:\Windows\All Users\Application Data\Symantec folder? I'm wondering if the CD put it back where it was supposed to be.

You're doing great up to now - we may not have cracked the problem yet but you're learning a lot of new stuff quickly! Wink

I know what you mean. I have been trying to get on all day to post you yet more happenings from Symantec. In the NIS box the green ticked disappeared, instead it was red "Attention". I opened it up and it said it needed fixing so I clicked on the Fix Now. It came back and said it was fixed but I still had the same thing showing [red Attention]. I tried again, still nothing so clicked on Help/Support and it immediately opened up a window within Symantec with the message saying "Product Inventory - Norton fixing it Cool at the end of the fixing another message saying "Successfully completed update of PI. Click ok and then run Live Update". This I did and hey presto, the green tick came back.

Thanks for the attachment. I have posted the info regarding the location of your LiveUpdate folder (being different to the location stated in the procedure) back to Symantec. Hopefully they will amend Step 5 avoid the confusion we had Smile

The burning question - has it made any difference??!

It is slightly quicker to boot up than before. I think I am going to have to live with NIS taking so long to appear on the taskbar (bottom right) before I can open anything else up. I thought about taking it out of there but then if anything is wrong I won't see it will I ?

I think Norton would show warnings whether or not the icon was there, but it would probably take the same amount of time to load.

Let's see if we can improve the startup speed. Apologies if you already have these two programs - just ignore the download/install bit and carry on. Smile

Download CCleaner - you want the 'Download latest version' link at the top right of that page. Install it, but please uncheck the box when it asks you if you want to install the Yahoo toolbar - you don't need it. Don't run the program yet.

Download Diskkeeper Lite . In case you haven't downloaded anything from this site before, just click one of the links in the middle of the page beneath 'Free downloads from'. Ignore the box showing the 'Recommended download' if it pops up and your Diskkeeper download will start after a few seconds. Install it but don't run it.

(Diskkeeper will take the place of the Windows defrag program and is quicker and more efficient).

Close any program windows you may have open, and close your browser if it is open. Now run CCleaner. Click 'Cleaner' at the top left, then 'Run Cleaner' at the bottom right. When it has done it's stuff, close the window. Note that you will need to enter your login/password details next time you visit a site.

Next, run Diskkeeper Lite. Click on the C: drive at the top of the screen, then click Defragment Selected Volume on the left. (I believe this is the same as my version - I liked it so much I bought it). Then click Start. Let it run it's course - it may take a while, but it's a lot quicker than the standard Windows program and it will work happily while you use the computer if you wish (though I recommend doing something else while it is working for the first time).

When done, close Diskkeeper and reboot. You should see an improvement in boot time and your system may also seem quicker when you are using it 'normally'.

Sorry for delay in getting back to you. Tried replying the day before yesterday but it wouldn't let me submit it. Yesterday I did not get on the computer at all ..... had a day off Wink

Back to business. Did all you told me to do with no problems.
Ran CCleaner, at the end it told me 593.9mb removed ....... is that a lot of rubbish or what lol. I don't understand the bit where you said "Note that you will need to enter your login/password details next time you visit a site" as it didn't ask me or give me a login name etc. Ahh do you mean I will have to set one up next time I visit that site?

Ran DiskeeperLite - this took a few hours to do lol. I have copied the results into notepad and attached for you. Restarted computer and it took 5 mins to load desktop + another 3 mins for NIS to finish loading.

You asked if Norton was behaving ....... it was until this morning, I had the attention icon up again on the Protection Updates. Clicked the fix now, no go. Clicked on the help and it said it was running a fix, validating PI Status fixed. Little liar, the attention was still showing. In the end I had to download their piupdate.exe to correct the problem which it has. This isn't happening because I still have the PI on my desktop too is it ?

I still have some symantec stuff in other places. Shall I make a list and attach for you?

Er, 593.9mb is quite a lot but is entirely believable. One of the biggest culprits is the browser cache. The default is to keep 20 to 30 days history in the cache which, depending on your internet usage, can grow rather large. I set mine to 3 days - anything before that has been forgotten anyway!

In Internet Explorer go to Tools, Internet Options, General tab. Click Settings in the Browsing History section and set 'Days to keep pages in history' to something less than 20.

When I mentioned logins and passwords I was referring to the fact that, due to cookies and other data being cleaned out, you will need to enter your usual login and password if a site needs it. For example when I come here (to CC) I normally get logged in automatically. After I clean up I arrive as a guest and have to enter my uname and password. It's no big deal, just a minor annoyance when I can't remember which password goes with which site. The same goes for sites such as ebay, Amazon and so on where you have registered in the past.

I'm beginning to think the slowness is mostly due to Norton - that seems to take forever to start (as you are well aware). The PI file on your desktop is just sitting there wondering why it's out of work. You can delete it now as you have the new one all set up.

The Diskkeeper log looks very good. The important bit is the Average number of fragments per file. A figure of 1.00 indicates that (mostly) each of your files is stored in adjacent locations. When a file is fragmented the hard drive finds the first part, zooms off to the outside of the disk for the next few parts, back to the middle, then half way between and so on - very time consuming. Defragmenting the files means the second part is next door to the first part, followed by the third part etc. More speed and less wear on the hard drive (and quieter, too).

By all means attach a list - we can clean them up now we have done that Symantec procedure. There are also some other bits to tidy up from previous pages. We can do that all at once.

I had rather hoped for a bit more speed now - I'm running out of options. I'll check back over your other logs and see if there is something I missed. Pity I'm not Merlin! Wink

Wow, I was shocked at the amount lol. My history thingy is already set to 3 days. However, in that same box with the heading Disk space to use - Recommended:50-250MB mine is set to 915. Isn't 915 far too high, I have never touched this setting.

Of course, I am a dipstick as I know what you mean. I was thinking you meant the progs I had downloaded at that time Embarassed

You will have to keep yourself a little book with all your user names, passwords and sites of course.

I did prefer Diskeeper to Windows defrag. Like you said a lot more thorough. Would it be okay to keep this and use it instead of WD ?

I have attached a list of odds and sods of Symantec plus a few bits which I don't know if they should still be there in:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec

I'm sure you have not missed anything. It's a pity that NIS takes so long to load. Not to worry.

I would set the history thingie to 50MB - probably still too much for 3 days history but certainly better than 915MB. (My Firefox has used just under 25MB so 50MB should cover all your needs).

As for passwords, I keep mine in a protected file. But, being the contrary (read 'awkward') person that I am, I like to think I can remember them all and only check when I get stuck Laughing

Glad you like Diskeeper! Yes, you can keep it as a replacement to the Windows version. I find it handy to click the Analyze button just to check if the drive needs defragging.

Well, I thought about trying to do it like you gave me the info to search for LiveUpdate, but I didn't want to do it wrong so I did it the hard way, looked in Administrator, All Users, Default User and The Owner for Symantec folders and typed them out. Told you I was a dipstick didn't I lol. Could I have done it if I had searched for Symantec ?

My girlfriend, oops, fiancée (got engaged last month!) maintains I'm unique. Mind you, she also wants to put me in a room with a psychologist and see who runs out screaming first! Laughing

Anyway, the show's not over yet - there's the cleaning up to do. That error message was probably a one-off thing caused by all the faffing about we did with Norton, but let me know if it happens again. Post the Appcompat.txt file if you like - it might not tell me anything useful, but then again it might.

To save trying to find it, copy this line:

c:\documents and settings\TheOwner\local settings\temp\WER5de2.dir00\appcompat.txt

then paste it into the 'Add an Attachment' filename box when you post.

Now, where's the dustpan and brush?
