|
|
I have Vista Ultimate installed on a Virtual PC 2007. I am new to Vista. I installed Proxo right away and Sidki's filters of course. Proxo works fine except when I boot or reboot the machine. As the desktop loads, I get a popup asking if I really want to UNinstall Proxo! I also get another popup of Proxo's (not Sidki's) Readme text. I get a third popup that loads Fx3 RC1 with a new tab open to Proxo's Help file.
Very puzzling. Especially when I found these three items in the MSconfig Startup tab! I have no idea how installing Proxo would put those items in MSConfig Startup! I did put a short cut to Proxo in Start\Program Files\StartUp but that shouldn't put anything but Proxo itself in MSConfig Startup.
So, I unchecked the items and rebooted and after much drama with weird screen settings Vista finally started and I didn't get those items opening on the desktop. Of course, I did get the MSConfig box complaining that I am in Selective Startup now. I haven't gone looking in the Registry for the entries yet to get rid of them properly so MSConfig won't complain. I am new to Vista so I don't even know if they will likely be in the same places in the registry as for XP.
Anyone else with Vista have this happen? Anyone tell me the registry keys in Vista for these?

not on Vista, all i can do is answer your question by returning another question...
that being, and i hear it all the time, but just how do you install Proxo?
i've been a proud Proxo user since the days of Arne's site, so that puts it back to at least 2002, i'm sure it was much, much earlier than that...
point being, i have NEVER installed Proxo...
i EXTRACT a .zip file into a folder, run the contents of that folder... period...
that is NOT an "installation"...
EXTRACTING files makes NO "registry" entries, NONE...
(not counting some MRU or whatnot...)
IF you, or others out there, are using some form of "installer", may i ask WHY? 'cause the phrase "i installed proxo" is really throwing me off, there is no "install"...

I remember Arne's site...he threw me off it...don't recall why now.
There is a zip file and an installer right here at Castlecops. I think I used the installer version I had on my host XP machine and had a terrible time dropping it on Vista...Vista has too many defenses. But I digress...I remember using the zip version many years ago and you are right that Scott talked about how Proxo makes no registry entries. But nonetheless, I have an "installer" version not the zip version.

Bloody hell Arne's site that was a while ago, didnt realise id been using the program so long. Anyhow Im with Proxfox, Ive never installed proxomitron to windows for years now. Just make a backup of the folder then add it to a new install of windows in program files and add to start up along with the localhost 8080 stuff in IE. Im using Vista Ultimate and the only file i have in my startup for proxo is "C:\Program Files\Proxomitron Naoko-4\Proxomitron.exe"
Basically thats all you need. _________________ Kind Regards

Mele20,
any update?
have another thought, maybe, since it's a startup issue, maybe you could try "CCleaner" and have it's "tools -> startup" delete those "shouldn't-be-there" entries...

MSConfig does capture that location, among others
http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msconfig_xp.html
remove the uninstall link from startup folder and that will stop prompting removing Proxo
reset it back to enable all and use windows defender Software tool to control startup progs

Yes, that would work. So would Spybot. I don't have either currently.
But this is too strange and I want to figure it out.
Just like I figured, when I booted this Vista machine a few minutes ago, up popped MSConfig warning as I reached the desktop. That will happen every time unless I can get rid of those entries I disabled and get out of Selective Startup. You'd think that Microsoft by now could have managed to get MSConfig working properly. I had checked the box to never show me that warning again. But I know from 98SE and XP that Windows ignores that checkmark and shows you the warning anyway. Seems like by Vista, Microsoft could fixed that. I don't care if the machine runs forever in Selective Startup. I have been running the 98SE machine that way for many, many years. I just don't want to see that warning every time I boot or reboot.
Maybe I will give up and install CCleaner or Spybot.

This is is Vista Ultimate not XP. I read the site you linked to and I disagree with that advice other than on a temporary basis. Using MSConfig to disable programs is a bad thing to do on ANY Windows version because then you will get that warning every time you boot/reboot because checking the box to not see the warning again doesn't work (or may work but only sporadically). You have to either use Spybot or CCleaner to remove the entries or remove them in the registry yourself. It is ok to disable in MSCofig temporarily but then you need to do it properly so you don't keep getting that warning box.
There is NO uninstall link or read me link or help file link in the startup folder. There never was. That is what is so weird about this. The only thing there is a link to Proxo. Same link that is in my XP folder. So, the question here is why does that link in XP simply start Proxo at boot, whereas, the same link in Vista starts Proxo at boot and also starts the uninstaller, readme file, and Proxo help file?
There is something screwy about the Startup folder in Vista. It has Proxo shortcut in it and a FOLDER named Firefox. Inside the folder, I found shortcuts to Fx and Fx Safe Mode. Fx is NOT listed in Start/Programs (I'm using Classic style Start Menu). Fx is listed ONLY inside a folder inside the Startup folder. That's nutty. I took the two shortcuts and dropped them where they should be in Start/Programs and then deleted that Firefox folder that was inside the Startup folder.
Windows Defender tool? UGH. I disabled Windows Defender first thing. I want it gone as I get error box on boot about how it can't start. I want it totally gone. I want to remove those entries in MSCofig from the Registry. That is the best way to deal with this sort of thing. I've had to do it for 98SE and XP.
I went to the usual locations in Vista (that I would go to in XP) in the Registry to find the entries and delete them but I see no entry for Proxo anywhere in any of the locations Microsoft would use for Startup entries. There must be a location I am forgetting about. I did find some odd stuff in the Vista registry. Why would Netscape be there? I have Netscape in the same location in the XP registry but I had Netscape for awhile on XP and evidently it didn't uninstall completely. But I have not installed Netscape on Vista. I also saw Sonic entries in the Vista registry! I hate Sonic...what is it doing in the Vista registry? I don't use Sonic.

it's starting to sound like the root cause is actually not Proxo at all... but Firefox...
how did a Firefox FOLDER land in Startup?
is Firefox set to "start" at Startup?
does Firefox load Proxo upon Firefox's startup?
again, there at NOT supposed to be ANY registry entries for Proxo...
and, um, seems no other Vista user is reporting "issues" with the .exe "installer"... i personally still don't like the idea of "installing" Proxo, but that's just "me", lol...
