Hi sweets1953,

I have usually got good results (in other words I found many more deleted files than I was looking for at the time) using PC Inspector File Recovery . It's completely free.

Download and install it to your main drive. The less you do with your slave drive the greater the chance of data recovery.

pc inspector is user unfriendly, maybe you can tell me how it works or send me a link to instructions cause i don't know what i'm doing or whats occurring,
also when i click properties on this 30 gb hd, 2.3 gb are used and since there's no files evident i'm guessing that's where the lost files are, do you agree, paul

It can be a bit baffling when you first run it, though there is a tutorial in the Help file - open Help, click the '+' sign next to English and select Tutorial. This is how I use the program:

Open the program and select English as the language.

In the next window click the top tab on the left - it has a green arrow pointing up. When it has scanned for installed drives on your system, click on the letter relating to your slave drive (it will probably be D: or E: ) and click the green tick.

Then go to Tools, Find Lost Data and click the green tick in that window (top tab on the left).

Wait while the whole drive is scanned.

When it's done, click the '+' sign next to Root in the left hand pane. When you click on a directory in this pane, the deleted files are shown in the right pane. You should also click on Lost (left hand pane) to check there.

If you find the files you need, right click on them (use Shift + Click to select a group) and choose Save To.

There are other free data recovery programs but, in my experience, they don't find much more (if anything) than File Recovery. Commercial programs probably would but I haven't needed to use them. At the end of the day it depends on how much you value the data - a professional data recovery service would be expensive (hundreds of dollars) but may be worthwhile.

If you don't mind hard work, I would recommend Runtime software. I've used it to recover my work when I accidentally formatted without backing up.

Although the software says you can't recover stuffs without paying, you just have to work extra hard for it.

Each of the file has to be saved manually, one by one to your another hard disk (if no spare hard disk, another partition).

If you have a lot of files, you will spend days recovering it. I took about a month (tells how many files I have Laughing )

If you don't want to waste so much time, you can pay for it. I would say it's worth it. But to be sure, just run it and scan and see what it is capable of recovering.

Depending on the file system you are using, you choose either the NTFS version or FAT32 version.

can i try saving the files to a cd or disc or is it better to save them to my master hd,
also i think when i tried opening some files using pc inspector they didn't seem to amount to anything more than gibberish or it required using another file to open it

THANKS MR2,
For the thorough explanation of how to use PC Inspector!
The program located hundreds of 'lost' files, (took about 30 minutes) as indicated on the left hand side or directory. However, when I sent an individual cluster or 'SaveTo' as you suggested to my master HD and tried to open it, the Microsoft Word file either contained gibberish which I couldn't make sense of or else it was blank. I should say that my new master HD has an older version of Microsoft Word, (Dell no longer has that version of Microsoft Word), older than what was on the original document and HD when I created it. I don't know if that's the problem or else that I have to 'Save To' groups of clusters scattered all throughout these lost files to make any sense. I would appreciate any more help from you and again thanks for the explanation.

Hmm.
Try this:

Open the program and select English as the language.

In the next window click the top tab on the left - it has a green arrow pointing up. When it has scanned for installed drives on your system, click on the letter relating to your slave drive (it will probably be D: or E: ) and click the green tick.

(Those 2 steps are the same as above).

Now go to 'Object' in the menu at the top and select Find Files. Just type an asterisk (*) in the 'Name:' box and click the green tick.

That should show you a more meaningful list of retrievable files.

perhaps i didn't explain myself properly, i located hundreds of lost files with you help, they all are totally understable but, when i 'save to' my master drive and try to open say a microsoft word file on my master drive, i either get some gibberish and boxes that don't make any sense or else a microsoft file with nothing in the body of the text, am i supposed to open a group of files together, if so, how do i know which ones go together? the other possible reason i'm having this problem i think is this, when i orignally created these document on my now slave drive i had a different program for microsoft word than i have now on my new master drive, reason being is that dell no longer makes that version so i installed an older version, could that be the reason these files when opened are either gibberish or blank?? i leave it to you mister2, the expert, thanks again

can I also ask what did you mean by 'use shift + click to select a group? i'm not understanding you here

It depends on which file system you are using. If you are using NTFS, you will use GetDataBack for NTFS. Likewise for FAT32.

I suggest you try GetDataBack - you may find it easier to see what's recoverable and what's not.

Check the version you want for your drive - go to My Computer and right click your slave drive and select Properties. On the General tab it tell you the file system (either NTFS or FAT32). Download the appropriate version, install it and run it.

Click Next and allow the program to scan for drives. In the next window click on your slave drive (probably called '2nd Hard Drive') in the left hand pane and click Next.

When the scan has finished, click Next and you will see a list of deleted files generated. You can then right click an entry and use Open With to view the file. If it is OK then save it from the application you opened it with.

As dragon1988 said, you need to do this with each file while you use the demo version. If you find a lot of files that are retrievable then it would be worth paying for the full program.

I'm away for a couple of days but will check in when I get back.

Mister2:
I will try GetBackData but first I have a sleveral questions re PC Inspector please:
Should the master drive have the same versions of apps, programs, OS, etc that the slave drive had? Is this why I'm having difficulty opening the files once I transfer the lost files to the master drive? For instance I'm using an older version of Microsoft Wod than I had on the slave drive when I created the files. I'm wondering if that's a problem, do you know?
Another question:
You said I could open a group of files by pressing "Shift + click", to quote you. What is Shift + click, did you leave something out.
Another question:
I'm primarily interested in finding my Microsoft Word files. Is there some designation I can make on PC Inspector to locate only those files?
Another question:
How do I know which bit files go with one another to make a complete file? There doesn't seem to be any way to tell which files go together
Please don't be offended, please answer all questions I am just trying to follow your directions Mister2 you have been extremely helpful. Thanks And I'll wait till you return.
