I was recommended PGP as a good tool for enhanced privacy, and I liked the trial - but not its painful price. It seems that with GPG and TrueCrypt you would get about the same facilities for free, but if so, why would anybody pay €94 for PGP? I'd like to be elightened about the pro's and con's of each

Good point. The problem is, if the trial version works all right, you'll not really be able to test the support. Is it really worth its price, compared to the forum style support of GPG/TC?
