Mr2,
Red files have been overwritten and so are probably unrecoverable.
Which is why I said when I opened each Word file there was nothing in the body of the message.
Some of the Word clusters found with PCInspector said I had to download a newer version of Word in order to open the file. However I never had a newer version of Word than I have now when I created all my files. Why do you think I got that message?
Also some of the clusters said: 1) to check file permissions for document or drive and 2) use File Open dialog box to locate the document.
Do you know how to do either one of these things and more importantly, do you think I will recover more files by doing so? Thank you.

GetBackDta ver 3.32 for NTFS:
Is there a way to program GetBackData to scan only for my Microsoft Word files, .doc so that I don't have to scan through thousands of files? If so how is this done please step by step?

I also would like to know if it's possible to program any one of these undelete programs to seach for just the name of a missing file like xxxxxxx.doc? thank you

I did, I just don't have an answer. I would think the message about a newer version of Word may be due to a slight corruption in the recovered files. Your version of Word sees that you are trying to open a document (from the .doc file extension) but doesn't recognise the format and assumes there is a newer version out that can open it. Have you tried opening a file when that message appears? (See 2 below)
Re your two questions:
1) I think that is only half a message. It should tell you to do something to perform those tasks.
2) This message is telling you to open Word, go to File, Open and navigate to the document, rather than double click the document to open in Word.
As for searching for a particular document, proceed as before but where you previously typed *.doc type xxxxxxxx.doc (where xxxxxxxx is the filename).
I haven't had time to check out GetDataBack yet. From a quick glance you need to open the program (either NTFS or FAT depending on the filing system on your drive)
Click 'Systematic file system damage'
Next
Select your slave drive from the list
Next
When scanning has finished click Next to see the list of retrieved files
You should be able to right click on a file and select Open With, then save it from the application. I will look into it more soon as I didn't find much on the old drive I scanned.

Have you followed the instructions above?
See  /p1092423-lost_my_files_on_my_hd.html#1092423 from earlier in this thread. Use Open With and select either Word or Notepad.

I tried right clicking on an individual file with GetBackData and was prompted to use a license code, so I don't know what or how the other poster was able to paste files to a notepad

Please confirm you followed my instructions exactly.
The other poster did not paste the files to Notepad - there is no mention of Copy or Paste anywhere in that post I linked to.
You will be prompted for a license code if you right click and select 'Copy'.
If you got the message about a license code when you selected 'Open' or 'Open With' then I am stuck - my evaluation copy does not show this behaviour and I don't know enough about the program to suggest a workaround.
If GetDataBack found the last few files you lost and they appear to be intact (right click, View to verify this) then I would consider paying for the application to complete the exercise.
