Hello there, sorry to be a pain but i have tried alot of different websites , obviously including this one and I still have a problem that seems to differ from anyone elses.
Im not going to paste the whole WindowsUpdate.log but i believe this part is the most imporant:
| Quote: | 2008-05-03 18:04:16:484 3524 11e0 Misc Registering binary: C:\WINDOWS\system32\regsvr32.exe /s "C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuaueng.dll"
2008-05-03 18:04:16:609 3524 11e0 Misc FATAL: Self registration of C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuaueng.dll failed, error = 0x8024D007 |
Your probably thinking that this looks pretty familiar to other errors, however, if i manually try to register using "Regsvr32 wuaueng.dll", i get the following error:"Load Library("wuaueng.dll") Failed. The specified module could not be found."
Im not really sure what this means...the file is in the system32 folder? I have tried updating permission but that did not seem to help.
Sorry if its an obvious answer but ive been trying to fix this for days.

MekongDelta 69,
Read all the way through the threadand have tried everything suggested so far. The steps you wrote seemed to be working till i got to Step 4 point 8.
Whenever I click ok the regedit system freezes, becomes non-responsive and I have to end the program.
Using XP sp2. System is a clean rebuild installed, again, a couple of days ago and still can't get Auto updates to start, started once then immediately stopped. Everything else seems to be correct apart from auto updates, BITS is fine and Event manager is fine.
Any suggestions????
C

|

This is a little off topic, but this thread back in 2005 and specifically where Norton killed my Auto Updates really saved me in getting them to work again. Ultimately I went to AVG Free which has worked great since that time. However, AVG has just released a new version and I've been unable to install it as it keeps saying there is "another" anti virus program running. No one could find this "other" anti virus so I switched to Avast which didn't have this "other" av problem.
Unrelated, I just downloaded Belarc Advisor. It reports TWO av's "running." Yep! Avast and Norton Internet Security 2005!!! Norton, a gift that just keeps on giving!

Regedit takes time to 'unfreeze' (as I mentioned in the OP). Eventually, it
will unfreeze.
...And yes, Norton interferes with everything. _________________ TF-116 Gamewarden (PBRs) RivRon 59 -- 'Nam '69

My problem is not with the BITS but with Automatic Updates. When I tried to enable the automatic update, and then change the service status from stopped to start, I can't do that.
An Error 1058 occured that says that either it is disabled or there is no enabled device associated with it.
Pls Help. Tq.

Welcome to the CC Forum
Try setting the startup type to 'Automatic', then reboot Windows. This should take care of it.

As far as registering Regsvr32 wuaueng.dll, try using:
"Step 3: Register related dll files",
but adding the above dll to the list.

My auto updates quit working about a month ago. I tried the Dial-a-fix 0.60.0.24 that wawadave had said and now everything is working. Thanks 4 the link!

This fixes autoupdate failures do to useing
start/run/sfc /scannow
so if recomending people do sfc /scannow might point them to this if their autoupdtes fail.

Since you can't edit posts anymore, I'll have to add this Step as an addition
to my original post:
If you have to repair/reinstall Win XP, it might cause a loss of the ability
to obtain Updates.
This is because the latest Windows Update relies on a File that's not found
on the XP CD, and the reinstall wipes out that File's references in the Registry.
You'll have to re-register that File in the Registry by doing the following steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. In the Command Prompt window, input the following commands.
Press Enter after each command:
a. net stop wuauserv
[Enter]
b. regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll
[Enter]
c. net start wuauserv
[Enter]
d. exit
[Enter]
That stops the Windows Update Service, registers the File with Windows
and restarts the Service.
