|
I recently found the startup item obsver in msconfig- it's path is c:\windows\system\obsver.exe.
I couldn't find any reference to it in Microsoft support, sysinfo.org, or a google search (except for some forums which showed hijackthis logs that listed this program). Unchecking it did not seem to cause any interference with the computer (that I could see). Still I would be grateful for any available information.

I found two Google references to http://www.lingoware.com/
Does that ring a bell?
If not, could you maybe send a copy of the file to submit_stuffATxs4all.nl for analysis? (replace 'AT' by @)
Thanks in advance!
Also, I'd like to see the file in context. Would you please temporarily REcheck the file in Msconfig, then restart your computer.
Now go to our download page, and download Hijack This.
Unzip to a folder other than your Desktop or the Temp folder, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".
When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please show us its contents.
Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet. _________________ Tony CLSID List

Thank you for your response.
First, yes I do have some lingoware program installed.
I forgot to mention I am using PIII and WinME.
I don't know if there is any connection or not, but after rechecking obsver in the startup tab, I did have some difficulty restarting the computer.
After sending this response, I unchecked this startup entry, and the restart went smoothly. However as this is Win ME, it is hard to know if there is any connection.
Thanks for your advice, and have a happy new year.
Here is the hijackthis log:

Well, could you still send us a copy of that file, as requested, please?
I'd like to make sure it is indeed what it appears to be.
Also, does Lingoware work as it should without obsver.exe starting up? _________________ Tony CLSID List

Sorry, but I do not see how to attach a file in the response window (post a reply). Please advise.
Since I don't use lingoware, I uninstalled it and deleted its files, but obsver is still there with three file extensions, .dat, .exe, .lgc

Or simply send those files to submit_stuffATxs4all.nl as I initially requested (replace 'AT' by @)
No need to attach anything to this forum topic; just attach them to your email:

Thanks for the files; they're most definitely part of a LingoWare install.
If you still have the application installed, you might experiment with leaving obsver.exe disabled.
If any part of LingoWare stops working like it should, simply "toggle it on" again. _________________ Tony CLSID List

You're welcome; incidentally, I dropped the LingoWare folks a line asking for more information on the file.
We've added obsver.exe to our Startups database, but it would be nice if we could get the definition exactly right. _________________ Tony CLSID List
